I doubt you need to be told this but they're not necessarily hyper realistic depictions of human life, they're sitcoms

Yeah but Harry Potter isn't realistic and it still makes people want to be a wizard.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-15 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But how many people over the age of 15 use that to measure their real lives?

...don't answer that.

Every now and then I feel bad that I've never sat on a rooftop patio strung with cafe lights during the golden hour, sharing a laugh over cocktails with my racially diverse group of very close friends who all happen to be extremely photogenic and have very white teeth... and then I remember I don't know a single person who could claim to have done that, either (parts of it sure, but not all of it at once).

It's nice anon, but only rarely does it last. People grow apart, people fall out. There's often pain to go with the sweeter memories.

I think the fact that this is something so many people yearn for is a big part of what made these shows so popular in the first place.

Huh. Friends never really felt real to me (for many obvious reasons) so it never really inspired any envy on my part. Also I felt like having people like that in my life would prove really annoying IRL.

I mean, yeah, I'd love to have a friend who owned a big chunk of prime New York real estate and let me stay there for cheap!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but who among us would come off successful, cool, or attractive compared to TV PEOPLE?

Oh my god, I agree so much! I know that they're basically the sitcom and friendship/work life equivalent of wish fulfillment fantasy. But I could never stop myself from fantasizing about having this kind of life. Or at least a more realistic equivalent.

But the fact is I haven't had a friend-group of more than 3 people since highschool. I know I shouldn't hold myself to this fictional standard though, of course. But they do call it "wish" fulfillment for a reason.

I also think some of my favorite niche AUs are 'Friends' style ones, where the main characters from other franchises are put into a setting where they hang out with each other whenever they're not at work. Bonus if the writer tries to imitate the jokey sitcom dialogue, and clearly put some thought into what character would fit the 'Friends' character. For example: "Yosuke from Persona 4 would be the Chandler".

I've always felt the same way. I just want a nice group of good friends to hang out with and it turns out that's not as easy as it sounds.

Who in Friends had a real job we saw a whole lot? As a New Yorker, that loft annoyed me every time I saw it. Who was the millionaire who actually owned that place and how did the Friends people get access to it? I get the wish fulfillment aspect--god knows I've had it with other shows, mostly the BTS stuff because it seems so exciting.

Also, remember when you watch Friends, you're watching some of the best-paid actors on TV. And New York is totally white, unless you're a mailman or service worker. Like Seinfeld.

I get OP feeling that way. They should watch the Honest Trailer for Friends on YouTube. Honest Trailers are a blessing, plus they're really funny.
