Do you even need to give the artist a reason?

You could say something like "I'm gonna pull back a bit for now, but still want to support you!"

You don't necessarily have to say you're not into what they're doing, although "Your content isn't what I'm looking for right now, but I still want to support your work, so I'm lowering my tier. Good luck; I'll be around!" Might work?
