This is kinda like the Harry Potter secret. Shipping is fun, but the whole "wish they were canon" stuff is heavily related to lack of representation in media.

Given that the 'wish they were canon' stuff is universal, and just as applicable to straight boyslash fangirls and hetshippers with absolutely no shortage of existent representation as it is to actual queer fans of queer ships that represent their own identities... nah.

No it's fans wanting to be 'right' the rep argument is just used to give the claim more validity because it's trying to make out the selfish, subjective want as 'socially righteous' in some manner. When it isn't.

I definitely at least partially agree. I think people will always ship, and many of those people will always yearn for their ships to be canon, regardless of how much or how little rep there is.

That said, there's no question that I yearn harder for my slash ships to be canon specifically because they never do become canon. As the years and the non-canonical ships pile up, the yearning kind of compounds on itself. I find myself thinking how ridiculously lopsided it is that popular het ships are highly likely to become canon, while queer ships still have barely a snowball's chance in hell. And I mean, quite apart from my desire for my OTPs to be canon because they're my OTPs, I often feel a little ragey are how much variety there easily could be in canonical ships, and how little there actually is. Like, great, another het ship. Thanks. *puts it on the shelf with the other eighty het ships*

I can agree with this. I also appreciate that unlike the two anons above, you're not immediately taking the most cynical position about fans wanting diversity just to try to derail any point AYRT was making.

Yes, sometimes jerks use wanting to have diversity to be "right" about their ships. And yes, sometimes these shippers are straight people fetishisizig the queer experience. But can we stop pretending that these people make up the whole? It's extremely irritating for me as a lesbian to see people tell me that I want to see diversity for the "wrong" reasons.

???

Nowhere in the secret does it say anything about shippers wishing the ships were canon.
