Yeah, sort of the same thing here. I've been a really fast reader my whole life so under 5k is often not enough for me to really even sink into the story before it's over. Some people can do good short fics, and they're nice to just take a little break and see an idea someone had, but it's over so soon I feel like I kind of didn't spend any time "reading", if that makes sense.

And indeed, so many canons either skip over explanations of something, or the explanations don't make sense so you need further explanation... or it's clear that what you see in canon is just the very tip of the iceberg and there's a great deal of worldbuilding that's just mentioned once or twice (in my fave fandom, there are item descriptions. Some of them could be entire stories on their own) to be expanded upon. And that's the kind of stuff I like to write and read. =)
