No, what's absurd is calling someone a racist because their head canon doesn't align with yours. Reacting to that accusation with some hostility may be somewhat counterproductive, but it's not unreasonable.

Oh I'm not disagreeing with that, because the "and you're racist for not headcanoning Hermione as black" people suck.

If AYRT had just left it at "I have hostility towards people calling me racist for not agreeing with their headcanons" then they would be completely justified. And they still are in that regard.

It's that they admit that most of their hostility towards these people is not because of the more obvious toxic anti behavior, but because they already had a different headcanon that makes them defensive to differing opinions.

The fact that they're aware of how unreasonable that is, and how silly the whole thing would be if antis didn't make everything worse, is why I don't think anyone should hold it against AYRT. People are allowed to be unreasonable in the way they feel, especially if they're not hurting anyone. And they're absolutely not hurting a single person with their headcanon, but are up against people who want to hurt people to defend THEIR headcanons.

I apologize for not being clear in my first response that this is what I meant. Because while the reason for the hostility is a bit unreasonable, the hostility in general towards the people calling others racist over headcanons is absolutely valid and founded. And even though the reason for being hostile isn't the best obvious reason, OP's still completely fine and experiencing a natural part of relating to characters in written media.
