(Anonymous) 2021-08-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)Love your vamps the way you love vamps and don't let the "gatekeepers" get you down.
(Tangent)I feel this happens in the werewolf fandom too. Like, you've got a group who loves "Sexy" werewolves that can border on alpha/omega genre lines. Like Patricia Briggs werewolves (who are a tad too dysfunctional for me.) And then you have the group who wants the Hollywood horror out of control MONSTER w/ lots of HUMAN ANGST. (Which writing is STUPID difficult.) And they think this is "Cool." And I'm going "You can have an out of control anything. Making it an out of control wolf doesn't make it any cooler. It can be an out of control zombie, an out of control swamp monster, and out of control bear/monkey/skunk monster (depending on your location). Out of control has NO conflict. Yeesh." (But a lot of these are men, imo, who want excuses to not control their toxic behavior. Or at least if the people asking about it on r/werewolf are anything to go by.)
And so, I'm sitting here with my werewolf the apocalypse introduction to the mythos where you didn't have TIME for angst, you were too busy being natures 9ft answer to the chainsaw and fighting the wyrm and going "Just give me my wolfy found family with big guns and motorcycle gear and medieval rules. Thank you!" (Obviously, I delved into folklore for my books later and WHAT DO YOU KNOW, werewolves weren't OUT OF CONTROL monsters until after the werewolf trials in the 16th & 17th century!!!)
Sorry, prolly could be it's own secret but then everyone would know it was me. Probably.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)I cannot fault this logic.
Wolves are much cooler than zombies IMO. (I just don't like zombies really. I will take a mummy over zombies. And there's not much of a difference.)

(Anonymous) 2021-08-24 06:43 am (UTC)(link)I don't mind rabid, mindless, out-of-control monsters, purely as monsters. I mean, I love 28 Days Later as a movie. But if it's the POV characters who are periodically completely out of control then yeah, I don't tend to find it all that compelling. What I personally find extremely compelling is biological imperative stuff and ~weird biology~ stuff where the person isn't sure how in control they are and is scared shitless because they feel out of control regardless of whether they actually are or not. In that scenario the creature either has to be new to their condition, or there has to be a new element at play that changes how their creature instincts function.
So I guess my true favorite kind of monster fiction is one part body-horror, one part identity crisis, one part ~sexy~ biological imperatives (which double as horrifying biological imperatives because any impulse is horrifying when you're not sure you can control it), and two parts mutual pining. Also, the human character is a bamf who is way less afraid of the monster character than the monster character is of themselves. Yup, that's my shit.
