I had one that happened in more than one fic recently, and I don't speak up because it's dangerous territory.

I call it the surprise!trans twist.

Example, or a recent fic of a pairing I like:

Chatfic, class LGBT GSA club chat. Characters all intro themselves in the chat; pronouns, sexuality, and some supporting characters are openly trans.

One half of the pairing, a dozen or so chapters in, is suddenly trans. Not "I am scared to reveal I'm trans," which is a valid story idea. They suddenly mention a binder; and in-story it was considered common knowledge. The fic was not tagged the character was trans. They did not mention it when everyone was introducing themselves. It felt like the author suddenly changed things mid-stream, and threw me right of the immersion.

I wanted to comment about it because it came from nowhere, but that's a sensitive subject.

I hate it because it's usually done for the reason that the author wants to demonstrate how super woke they are for just doing this all casual-like in a "no biggie, just normal" way, often while trying to shame their readers in some weird condescending "Oh you didn't expect that huh? Guess you're not as woke as you thought/as me." way.

It's especially shitty if this happens in smut though. It's annoying at the very least (because yes, Jan, not everyone is into that) and harmful at worst considering hey, trans people read fic too and would prefer not to get their dysphoria triggered by your dumb smut, thank you very much.

I hate that too. Tag your fics accurately, damnit. Some people might not want to read it, and performing some kind of 'gotcha' on them is shitty.

And some people might want to read it! Some people are actively looking for fic where a given character is trans. If you don't tag it, you're missing out on readers who might really enjoy it.
