Chatfics in general.

Maybe it's because I don't like IRL groupchats. Or that my friends and I never talk or text like characters do in them, so it reads as cringeworthy to me. IRL kids and teens texting and chatting like that is fine, it's fictional characters doing it that's cringe to me. Especially because it means almost every character is wildly OOC so they can talk in the signature jokey/memey way of these fics.

Every time I read a promising fic summary, only to find out it was a chatfic because I forgot to exclude those, I die a little inside. I'm glad writers have fun with them, so no hate to them. It's just Not For Me.

For the most part I agree. There is an absolutely phenomenal (hilarious and exceptionally well-characterized) epistolary Sherlock fic in which the characters have a grouptext, and that fic is singlehandedly responsible for convincing me it CAN be done well. But it's one of the only ones I've seen do it well.
