Yeah. They're all waspy twigs, even the supposedly buff Major. But the faces-- especially early on-- had very round, powerful jaws. I liked it, actually.

I think it's a thing from early 80's manga. I don't see that style in these days' works. I mean, wide jaws, and even the noses were different.

Maybe it will cycle back in-- I like it better, aesthetically. Or filter in, so there's varity. Ooh, or slightly more realistic art, like Junji Ito's-- possibly without the whole gut-wrenching horror plots attached.

(And while I'm dreaming, maybe Greg Land will stop drawing interchangeable porn-star women as X-men and I will not lose half the games I play of 'Name That Marvel Female.')

Sorry, that got all thoughts on yaoi comic art.

I think there's more variety than usually people think. But there's also lots of generic looking anime that gives Japanese pop art a bad name. That's what i don't like about Clamp, in example. Or...dunno, many anime these days.

Uzumaki manga is okay, but yeah creepy >.< It makes me go WTF. But art is good.

I can't stand the big-breasted, skin tight dressed women that sule American comic. Not because breasts are bad, but because it feels like all women are like that, and it's not true. A girl can be flat and still hot, me thinks :)

Definitely. Anyone who says that manga is more generic or standardized has never played 'guess that marvel female'.

"She's... a double-D. With dark hair. In spandex. Um." *gives up, because that is fifty Marvel females*

There's incredible comic art out there (boy do I think Mike Mignola is the best thing since sliced bread. Pretty stylized, heavy lines for the win. And the art in Fable is widely respected as being *drool*tastic ) But just like with manga, the bright shiny face that is presented as 'western comics' is the 32 DD wasp-waisted wavy-haired superheroine and her chiseled partner.

Actually I'm waiting for a new wave that fushions styles, so the lines that define Japanese and American comic get blurred a little. There are western artists already that being influenced by manga, still want to give their characters more facial features and minimize the "kawaii" factor LOL

I've definitely seen that trend, in animation, too. And hey, way back when, Frank Miller based his art style off of Lone Wolf and Cub, and I LIKE his art. (His writing not so much.)
