The problem with the secret is that she seems to think she's a bad feminist (which, based on the secret, I don't think she is), and feels guilty about it.

It's a self-esteem issue. It's not like she's declaring that she's not a feminist because she likes Disney.

I think a bad feminist is the same as being a non-feminist--a bad feminist just claims to be for feminism (usually when it suits them), but they stab other less privileged women in the back. Non-feminist can at least blame it on ignorance or tradition, but a bad feminist is just plain shit.

If she thinks she is a bad feminist, maybe she should feel guilty--but blaming it on the fact she wasn't able to dress up like a Disney princess when she was younger is too stupid to me. Lots of people like Disney princesses and are good feminists so I am not sure her theory holds any water.

I am sorry for the personal attacks though in my first reply...I did sound harsh.

If she is a bad feminist, she should think about her real reasons for thinking this way, and not really try to blame Disney or anyone else for her behavior. Saying that Disney princesses are "probably" what makes you a bad feminist is not true...you become a bad feminist through your words+deeds.

I can't read the OP's mind, but I got the vibe that she was afraid OTHER people would think she's a bad feminist or judge her because she likes Disney princesses. Which seems more of an insecurity issue than a lack of support for human rights.

that's exactly it. i'm upset that people call me a bad feminist--directly and indirectly--for loving disney princesses.

when you hear people constantly decry you as not being a feminist and putting the movement back x years because you like aurora and snow white you start to not bring up your love of disney around them.

I don't think I've ever seen someone miss the point so completely.

And I don't believe there's such a THING as a bad feminist. You can be a jerk and a feminist, you can be an ineffective feminist, but you're either for equal rights for men and women or you're not. Of course there are different theories and philosophies in feminist literature, but I think as long as you believe in equal rights for men and women, you're a feminist. Full stop.

This doesn't mean you're a perfect person, or even a very nice one. You can be a stay-at-home mom who reads romance novels and wouldn't know Sojourner Truth from Naomi Wolf. If you believe that men and women should have equal rights, you're a feminist.

But women still feel that they need to somehow prove themselves. There is a lot of anxiety over whether or not they are being a feminist in the "right" way, which leads to many women labeling themselves as "bad feminists" for little reason outside of their own insecurities. This kind of anxiety is helped with the frequent depictions in the media of Straw Feminists (often created by male writers) whose every second sentence involves railing against men and the colour pink, etc. etc. These images are used to clue women into thinking that feminism is "mean," or that if they're not being militant, they're not really feminists.

I'm not reading anything in the secret that hints that the original secret maker is anything like the "bad feminist" you are describing. Honestly, you seem to be bringing your own baggage and definitions into this secret. You're shadow-boxing.

This is a very interesting comment...I consider a "bad feminist" to be someone who only wants feminism when it benefits them for example, a woman who works for higher wages for herself to achieve financial independence but then turns around and slams welfare mothers saying they need to bootstrap out, instead of working for more affordable childcare and such.

Yea, it is stupid when you see the fictional "feminists" in the media who hate the color pink or whatever...but I never knew that some people considered them to be "good feminists" or actually thought they needed to be like them in order to be a good feminist. If it's true, it is a shame. :/
