Dune, stillsuits, the movie....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2021-08-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm nearly done with Dune, and have to find a single, detailed description of the stillsuits. Paul and Jessica both talk about how they feel to wear one (slick inside, hot), the 'flaps' over the forehead and mouth are briefly mentioned, as is the hood; the nose plugs and catchtube, of course, are mentioned. But other than 'cloudy grey' as the color, and everybody wearing big, flowing robes over them, there is really just no detail.

So why do I keep seeing comments on YouTube and elsewhere about how in the new movie the stillsuits are all 'wrong' and 'horrible' and etc. Do the later books go into more detail?

I haven't seen a lot about the new movie so grain of salt, but the suit pics I've seen look just like updated versions of the original 80s movie. So, I guess, find out whether that movie came out after Frank Herbert described them in more detail or not? I can't speak to book details since I noped the fuck out of Dune after one, sorry. If the first movie was based on further book details or Herbert's go-ahead or something, then doing a visual homage to them is as accurate as anything, but if he never nailed down his own visuals or never said the movie got it wrong, then who's to say what's wrong?

Dune makes it clear that the suits work by breathing action/muscle movement, so they have to fit closely to the body. That's pretty much it for guidance, and 'skin tight thing with buckles and straps' is going to look pretty similar to any other 'skin tight thing with buckles and straps'.

I am re-reading Dune but omg, it's hard. There is a lot that really gets to me. I *think* i finished the second book, once upon a time, but hated it (or never finished), and didn't even think about the others. He's not my favorite author, for sure.

I believe the only real description in the book is when Paul and Leto first get dressed in them and meet Kynes and yeah, it's not that detailed, there's a lot of leeway. I don't know why people are that up in arms, except that a lot of people really didn't like the 1984 movie (I actually liked it) and think everything involved with it was wrong and the stillsuits for the new movie seem similar to the ones from 1984. Maybe some people expected there to be more with the forehead flaps, the filters (across the mouth), and the hoods, but I'm not sure why, since I can't think of any movie would want to conceal its stars faces like that for very long (superhero movies constantly find ways to get characters out of their masks).

The miniseries managed to make stillsuits that covered (and given the description in the book of what they do, covering everywhere including the face is clearly what the author intended them to look like) and didn't hinder their actors in any way.

ayrt

I would say a miniseries is a different sort of animal than a big budget movie. I mean, I don't know how much they are paying Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem, but it is probably more than they paid Alec Newman, Barbora Kodetová, Saskia Reeves, and Uwe Ochsenknecht. And I don't think I'm wrong that the movie studio is thinking that the names might be a draw to the movie. Yes, big fans of the book might not care who is playing the parts as long as they do a good job (though this is a big supposition given people have reacted over the years to casting for beloved characters), but I guarantee the studio is looking to draw in more than just those fans - the budget is huge at an estimated $165 million (for comparison, the 2009 Star Trek budget was about $150 million) and they're going to need a big audience.

Right? They really do. Which is a good thing in some cases, 'cause most superhero masks/face coverings look kinda stupid. To me.

The only impression i got from the new trailers was 'dark colored' and 'close fitting' which ...well. It says in the books that the muscle action of the body and breathing makes the suit work, so it couldn't be big and baggy and loose.

I guess we shall see!
