Haha, I know what you mean, but it's the reverse for me. I find it quite embarrassing in the beginning to look at NSFW art or read NSFW fic once I get into a pairing, it sort of feels like I'm peeking into their private lives, even though it doesn't make sense.

LOL I do this, too. But like the other commenter, I feel worse for the actors than the characters. About the characters, I think: Holy fuck, this is so out of character. These guys/women would NEVER do this crap.

I feel this in both directions. The first couple fics I read for a non-canon pairing always make me uncomfortable because I can't help being aware that the canon characters wouldn't do any of this with each other, and it kind of feels like the fic is making them do it.

Then, when I go back to rewatch canon, it can feel kind of like missing a step when I'm confronted with exactly how non-canonical all the fanon and fanfic and headcanons that I've been nurturing actually are.
