I think with fic, it's always been what hits that sweet spot for the fandom over technical skill. Sometimes it's an amazingly well-crafted fic that the author clearly put a lot of care and thought into it. Other times, it's a fic that's a little clumsy, but hits all those tropes and characterization that the fandom loves.

Yeah maybe that has something to do with it... I should remind myself of that when I feel discouraged.

On a side note, my most popular one-shot is my only smutty one-shot, and it's the one I put the least amount of time and effort into. That alone should tell me quality has nothing to do with it!

Oh hey, my most popular fic is also a smutty one-shot! XD And my least popular one is the one I spent months writing and researching (it's also my personal favorite out of all the ones I've written). Go figure, huh?

Haha! *high five*

DA

Also, time and effort don't equal quality all the time. I look back at my own stuff a lot, and there are things that I banged out in a one-hour fever dream that I really do think are better written than some things I spent weeks on.

But this is a common enough phenomenon in all art forms. There are bands who spend massive amount of effort on their albums, and the song that becomes their biggest hit is the one they wrote as a joke!

No accounting for people's tastes, I guess! I wish I could bang out high quality stuff all fast like that. Maybe I cross the line into "trying too hard" sometimes. If I'm not in a writing mood, though, I don't force myself, because that tends to result in crap. (Bless authors who can take requests. I am not one of them!)

I'm with you. There's stuff I've written while somewhat sleep-deprived at one in the morning that's better than the stuff I spent a lot of time plotting and researching. Maybe it's 'cause I'm less self-conscious about my writing when I'm sleepy. Thinking too hard and aiming for perfection makes me second guess myself too much and affects my writing voice.
