TW Self harm

(Anonymous) 2021-08-31 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to kick a self harm habit. I usually do it before bed at night.

The other night I was successful for the first time in not harming before bed! But then I had five whole wake up screaming nightmares, and I think it's because I didn't get some emotional crud out before bed via SH.

Anyone got any advice on how to healthily process negative shit before I sleep?

Long term, things like mindfulness meditation, tapping (aka EFT), and journaling all helped me develop a sleep routine where I have way less nightmares and no longer wake up screaming/crying/in full blown panic mode.

In the short term, can you replace it with something similar that gives you the same release but is less harmful overall e.g. holding an ice cube to your skin or snapping a rubber band against where you usually harm?

I honestly have no proper good advice on resolving your problems entirely. I managed to have a nightmare just from the concept of black holes alone. But what I recommend is making sure to engage in positive experiences or new experiences in the day, and putting on the TV or a podcast as you try to sleep. Can't think about bad things from the day if you're subconscious is thinking about the podcast in the background!
