But who did you spite? Did it work? Did they rue the day they did.. whatever it was?
...
Was it worth it?

I think if they got a new pairing they liked out of it, with tons of fic and art to enjoy, that's its own reward!

I think some people think spiteshipping is like gritting your teeth and forcing yourself to write something you hate just to get back at antis.

It's not really like that though, IME. It goes through several stages:

1. Sees a bunch of biting ants swarming some writer or artist over a ship you never really thought much about before. Thinks, "Damn that would suck to be on the end of that kind of shit. I think I'll go read their fic/look at their art and maybe give an RT or kudos to show some support."

2. Reads fic. Looks at art. Thinks, "Hmmm, this is really good. I never thought about it in so much depth before, but I like the way they portrayed them." Checks out their bookmarks to find more fic/art like it.

3. Observes how vicious and unhinged the ants sound over what seems to you like a perfectly fine ship, even if it wasn't your thing before. Reads more fic. Looks at more art. Certainly enjoys the creative works more than the nasty ranting against it.

4. Starts to think, wow, this dynamic IS really interesting. Ideas of your own begin to germinate.

5. You start creating works of your own. You're really enjoying it. By now you're probably following/communicating with other people who ship it and you're making new friends. You post your first work, and get a lot of nice feedback. Spiting the ants is now a much less important motivation than giving their victims something nice to enjoy (though it's still a nice side dish). Oh, and also, you now ship it for real. Your appreciation of other people's works for the ship is wholehearted and sincere.

It is like that a lot, though. It's great that it was different in your, and I'm sure many other's, experiences.

But most people I've seen spiteship don't actually become passionate about the ship in their own time, and only seem to make fic and art in places where they know people who hate that ship will be.

It's the difference between finding out you love a ship inspite of the controversies surrounding it, and finding out you love to ship something TO spite someone.

AYRT

Well, it's not in spite of the controversy, it IS because of it. If not for the controversy, I wouldn't have given those ships much of a thought probably. It was the controversy that got me interested.

And the antis were such horrible unpleasant people, the thought of creating more of the content they hate was, indeed, a perk, as was doing things that would make their victims happy.

But it doesn't work as well if the love for the ship doesn't develop for real. I have to be able to write it as well as ships I came to by other ways. There are many ways one might get seduced into a ship. This is one of them!

I do get that. And I'm glad you found a ship you enjoy from it.

Thanks! I'm having a blast. (This has happened to me more than once, in multiple fandoms!)

(I'm not secret OP, btw. I'm not in Star Wars fandom at all. I totally vibe with them though.)
