No, I've gone back and watched both since becoming an adult and Atlantis is just a much worse movie than The Lion King

Lion King is really strong in terms of like, narrative cohesion, but it's also very....Typical Heroes Journey Furry Hamlet, which is just not as interesting to me as the experimental and morally murkier gonzo scifi thing Atlantis has going on, or the vivid and utterly earnest retrofuturist aesthetic of Treasure Planet.

I find Treasure Planet and Atlantis both way more enjoyable than The Lion King. I find Treasure Planet just as moving emotionally if not more, and I find Atlantis more interesting and original even if it's also more inconsistent.

"Just a much worse movie" is not really a meaningful assessment. They have different strengths! I really hate this trend to treat people who have different taste as if they're pretending or fooling themselves. People don't have to have nostalgia goggles on, we can just have different taste from you!

Atlantis is about a million times more in my wheelhouse and aesthetic and vibe than Lion King is. I think Lion King is just much, much better made.

Isn’t that what I said? That they're not as good as the Lion King. I picked TLK as a point of comparison spefically because it is generally considered one of the best, if not THE best Disney animated movie. MOST Disney movies aren't on par with the Lion King.

The point I was making that these movies didn't necessarily flop just because they weren't amazing, but because they weren't marketable enough. I brought up Frozen because it outperformed every single Disney movie that came before it, and there's no way it's the best Disney movie ever made - but it's clearly the most marketable.
