Yeah, this. And as more and more fanworks disappear behind a paywall, the more socially acceptable that becomes, and the more that fucks over people who can't afford it.

I'm not going to contribute to this trend. I'm not paying anybody for fanwork and I don't want anyone to pay me.

This. Alongside all the legal issues involved, I don't see how people don't realize how many issues this can cause fandom in general. We hear so many stories from people about bad experiences with BNFs, or people obsessing over their stats, and the whole "Why isn't anyone reading my work, what am I doing wrong?" attitude and whatnot. Now add money to that mix, and that's a shitstorm just waiting to happen.
