(Anonymous) 2021-09-03 03:02 am (UTC)(link)And trying to use a built in fanbase as a way to earn financial independence, doing something that won't slowly kill their soul.
Personally, I'm starting to feel like I can't afford to have hobbies that don't earn their keep these days :(

(Anonymous) 2021-09-03 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)It's fine to have this hobby, but it's not fine to try to monetize it. So many people have tried to explain this to you.
Making fanworks is no longer a hobby when you make it a source of revenue, first off. Creating fanart and fic shouldn't have to "earn their keep". It's not like you're crocheting or basket weaving. I understand how creating art in particular can be expensive, so if you want to make money off of it, consider doing commissions instead of charging for art you've already made. You can even do it with fanart, because there's ways of going about it without advertising the fan aspect directly.
Secondly, it's not your intellectual property to make money off of. It's not illegal, but it's enough of a risk. What you seem to consider "eaking out a living using built-in fanbases" is a lot less honest work, and a lot more selfish than you think. If doing this as a hobby is ruined for everyone by people looking to cash in, those people will have no one to blame but themselves.
I'm repeating points that have already been said, but you clearly haven't been listening. And the fact that you keep trying to frame people countering your self-serving nonsense as attempting to bring a moral angle into this, instead of a cut and dry legal fact, is especially funny. Because this comment of yours I'm responding to is directly implying you think your standpoint is morally right. Because you seem to feel people have the right to charge for fanwork if it grants them financial independence, and keeps their soul happy. It might not have been said outright, but you sure did use some telling words. The economy is bad, no doubt. But not every way of making money is equally on the level, even if they're not technically against the law.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-03 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)i could not be rolling my eyes harder. do you think that our grandparents/great-grandparents/etc. worked because they adored their jobs and it gave them spiritual and emotional satisfaction? fuck no. they worked because it paid the bills. my grandpa spent his entire life working in a factory and he didn't enjoy it, but it paid well and had good benefits so he stuck with it. it's the lucky few who get to work a job doing something they truly love. most people work to make money so they can then afford to do what they love in their free time.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)I'm not going to contribute to this trend. I'm not paying anybody for fanwork and I don't want anyone to pay me.
