ayrt

Because the show didn't give a first name for such a long time and other characters just called him Sheriff or Sheriff Stilinski (or Dad or Daddio or whatever Dylan O'Brien came up with on the day for Stiles), fic writers came up with their own names (which is fair since it would be really odd for some characters not to know his first name) and many decided on John. But a good portion somehow also sort of thought that since the show cast and crew were aware of fandom, that when they finally named him, they would go with the prevailing fanon.

The show also didn't reveal Stiles' official first name until season 6A, but there was much less consensus on what his name actually was - Genim from an early episode, based on what was written on a folder in a scene (which I was sort of on board with at first because that's what it looked like to me too, but later I thought it was more likely a production placeholder that wasn't meant to be seen that clearly, though it also seems perfectly reasonable to use it as his middle name); based on canon mentions that it was hard to pronounce and spell, Przemysław was one of the more common ones, but I also saw Gościsław, Szczepan, Włodzisław and a few others (Mieczysław is his actual canon name).

aw, thanks for the writeup that's very interesting

i get being disappointed, but i admit i don't much understand the demand for fan content to be included in media. it feels like easter eggs make for such fun stories that they have kind of become an expected part because you hear about them so much, even though they're actually pretty rare and obscure usually

It's perfectly average to me. I'm asking the same question.
