because when fandom as a community decides on something it's usually the most popular (and sometimes this means best) writers and artists who have done so, and thus, the people who go against well-regarded fanon for canon are usually out of step with norms, and might also be out of step with writing norms.

I don't find it a hard and fast rule, but I too noticed that people who used the canon nickname Cass for Castiel tended to write worse stories than those who wrote fanon Cas.

That makes sense. I do agree it’s not a hard and fast rule though, because I’ve read just as many good Persona 4 fics that call the protagonist Yu Narukami than the non-canon manga/fanon Souji Seta.

And I’m being sincere about that, even though I’ll readily admit that I greatly prefer the sound of Yu to Souji. But doesn’t always happen. Sometimes the only people who care about new canon are very inexperienced writers who need some time and work.
