That sounds like a mess. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Most companies are so bad at actually training employees it's setting people up for failure or at least extra stress from 'figuring it out yourself'. Don't feel bad about bothering your boss (who sounds like she should be teaching you these things) on your first week!

Is there any reason everything can't at least run on a single computer?

Hmm. If tabaqui's town gov't is like many around here, I'd guess that their various types of software run on different operating systems so one computer's running Windows 10, one is running Windows 7 and one's running ProDOS 8. And changing the software at this point involves a task force, three subcommittees, the town engineer and a special election, so they just. Give each software its own computer.

NAYRT--also there are still computers that aren't connected to the internet or even an intranet, depending on the kind of info involved or how ancient the tech is.

Heeeee! Well, the Chamber is a non-profit, and not actually connected to the govt. at all. They do have a board. As far as I can tell, all the computers are running Windows 10, and unless something else is going on that I haven't seen yet, the one laptop is *onlY* to run Outlook.

For some reason, she hasn't grasped that Outlook can have several email addresses coming to one computer - i had two on my old computer at my other job - so this email goes out from this computer, that email from that computer, and they all seem to get every general/mass email sent to everything so it's all super-redundant. I dunno why she/they didn't put outlook on the 'main' computer so you could at least just switch back and forth from one email program to another, instead going from computer to computer.

There doesn't seem to be, but honestly, who knows. I dunno if they are just 'well, this computer doesn't have enough storage/ram for this new thing so we'll get another tower' or what.

The filing system is chaotic, as well, with things all over the place. On the second day, I talked to the boss and we moved me over to the 'main', big, L-shaped desk that is right up front by the door, because originally i was at this little tiny desk facing a wall, my back to the *door* (which i cannot stand), with barely any room and i was like 'can i ask why the office manager desk is here instead of there?' and there wasn't a really good answer so she said I could move everything. Which consolidated the three computers I'm supposed to work off of to one area, and set me up right next to the door (greeting people) and the copier, most of the files, etc.

The fourth computer is for...something? some bookeeping? I'm not sure, because the part time person that is doing that did about half of it off my two computers (which meant i had to find stuff to do for an hour while they did stuff) so....i dunno. For now i'm going to concentrate on learning the byzantine way things are filed/stored/entered/etc., and hopefully in a couple months i'll have all that down and can start to organize things in a way that makes more sense.

She's trying to teach, but it's like she's in her office doing all her 'catch up', and every time someone comes in (or her husband), she's talking about how hard it all is, she's overwhelmed, she has so much to do, blah blah blah, so i feel guilty asking her to drop stuff to show me something. I think she makes more work for herself than necessary, but until I know the job better, I can't *say* that for sure.

Thanks for lending a listening ear for my vent. :D
