Are you me, OP? I don't particularly like kid fics but I'm not repulsed by them and am desperate for anything with my OTP. And there's those fics with Mama bear, kids calling one of the men Mom, etc. It does take me out of fics. Might be my internalized mysogyny on my part where being feminine is lesser than masculine... Might be that the writer assignes traditional gender roles to charcaters where it doesn't make sense.

God, yes, there's this one fandom where the leader of the group really cares about his friends and everyone calls him "mother", motherly etc because...I don't know. It's annoying, he's not even the doting type, he literally just cares about his friends. Fandom can be so shit sometimes.

My guess is most of them are trying to write the "Mama" as gender nonconforming, because playing with that idea is popular right now... which there's nothing wrong with... but sometimes it's done in weird ways.

Reminds me of reading some Haikyuu fic before I actually got into watching and reading it.

Sawamura was just as dad-like as I was expecting in canon, but Sugawara was MUCH less motherly as fanon made him out to be. I actually really like his canon character, so it’s a bit frustrating in hindsight that so many fic writers made him the “mama”.

There’s nothing wrong with male characters having that doting and motherly character-type. But it doesn’t fit him to me. Is it because he’s shipped with Sawamura that he’s the “mama”? I’m not a fan of the implications of that, even though I’m sure they’re unintentional. Because Suga seems like more of another dad if anything.

Sorry for this rant! I apparently had strong Haikyuu fanon opinions I had been sitting on!
