I'm fed up with people thinking these people are actually influential. They're not, most of the time. They're either very conventionally attractive or young.
I wish more of us would realize that "influencer" is not an actual job.

Yeah, but you can just not pay attention. I'm not on Instagram and the YouTube algorithm knows better than to rec me this stuff so I just flat out never see it and it does not affect my life.

The ones using their kids for content are the people I can't fucking stand and there needs to be actual laws to protect kids from being exploited that way.

The people just shilling shit don't bother me at all, because they're just doing what regular celebs do all the time anyway. The only time I'll take onus with this is if they're trying to sell those awful detox teas or diets that actually do harm to people's bodies, if they're just trying to push some random make-up or clothes I don't care I just ignore that.

Family channels are the absolute worst, people hawking their kids for content without their consent (and I absolutely believe they have more kids once the older ones stop being 'cute,' this is how shit like the Stauffer family giving up their adopted kid like he's a dog happens). I fully expect in another 5-10 years we'll be seeing a lot of these kids speaking up about how harmful it was to them to have their entire childhoods broadcasted for everyone to see.

Did you keep up with the Stauffer family stuff? They adopted a kid, asked for donations for the adoption, made content with the kid, and then gave the kid up to another family when they couldn't deal with him.

With the advent of social media and how widespread the internet now is, it was inevitable that there would be those who found ways to use themselves to make money.

In many ways, influencer is another term for grifter. Don't get me wrong- I'm sure there are legitimate 'influencers', but really, it's all a grift. They want you to buy whatever they're pushing and they get paid to do it.

Eventually, those children they use in said grifts, will grow up, and realize, mom and dad got paid the big bucks to use them as propaganda and they never got a penny. They'll walk away and not look back. ( The Duggar family comes to mind in this regard- one of the older daughters learned her father was getting between 25k and 45k *per episode* and *none* of the kids saw any of it. She walked away from the whole shebang, as have 4 of her sisters so far.)

In the grand scheme of things, 'influencers' are still relatively new, but it's rapidly becoming a saturated field and that bubble will burst, sooner or later.

Are you me, OP? I don't particularly like kid fics but I'm not repulsed by them and am desperate for anything with my OTP. And there's those fics with Mama bear, kids calling one of the men Mom, etc. It does take me out of fics. Might be my internalized mysogyny on my part where being feminine is lesser than masculine... Might be that the writer assignes traditional gender roles to charcaters where it doesn't make sense.

but the better news is that it's perfectly fine to enjoy trash, even if you feel like you shouldn't. i've watched movies and read books that i've actively disliked multiple times just because i somehow enjoyed some aspects of them a lot

That's an odd stipulation for your friend to have as the general structure of most shows means that the main couple will have screen-time and relationships with almost every other character in the show, like it's pretty much guaranteed. I can only imagine that your friend gets annoyed a lot and I can guess that can get... grating, lol.

I'm closer to you OP, I like the main couple having interactions or relationships with other characters because that just rounds them out better and while I love romance I also love familial+platonic relationships too and a mix of all of them is good.

I have a rewatch project I want to do, but I'm slow at it due to IRL reasons and going through a depressive episode. Online person I'm supposed to work with messages me one day that they like a character from the show, and then also messages me a link to a clip about why a certain author sucks because he never completes his stories/projects. This actually kinda made me feel bad and paranoid that this person is throwing shade at me.

Am I being too paranoid due to depression? Should I ask wtf? Or should I shake my head and try to chill out?
