That's an odd stipulation for your friend to have as the general structure of most shows means that the main couple will have screen-time and relationships with almost every other character in the show, like it's pretty much guaranteed. I can only imagine that your friend gets annoyed a lot and I can guess that can get... grating, lol.

I'm closer to you OP, I like the main couple having interactions or relationships with other characters because that just rounds them out better and while I love romance I also love familial+platonic relationships too and a mix of all of them is good.

I too have little patience for supporting characters and side plots. I prefer streamlined main couple focused series.

Not liking side plots I can get, but no patience for supporting characters?

How many stories do you even find that are hyper-minimalist enough to only have the two characters that form a couple? Or did you just mean to say you agree with OP’s friend with merely not liking when it seems like supporting characters take up too much of one of the lead’s time?

I can only see such a romance where the couple do not interact with anyone else working is if the couple is stranded somewhere alone and there are literally no other people. That's a valid story, mind you, but naturally people will want to tell romance stories in settings with other people.
