Not using that tag doesn't mean I won't put a warning on a specific chapter if I feel it's warranted. I like to word things my own way so as not to spoil too much yet still give adequate warning, and offer to divulge more details if anyone has concerns. I'm also not entirely sure how to tag things, and kinda hate tags in general (when I read a novel, it doesn't come with warnings). Like... do I warn for rape/non-con when there's only an attempt (bound to disappoint people who are seeking fics using that warning) -- I definitely want to put SOME kind of warning on that chapter, but I also don't want to suck the suspense out of it with a "don't worry, the would-be rapist doesn't even get her clothes off" or whatever. I have to figure out the best way to do that in the Notes for that chapter. I've also had readers ask me at the start if there will be major character death, and I'll happily answer for THAT PERSON who needs to know, without ruining it for everyone else. That sort of thing.

I know some people won't even read my fic because of the "choose not to use" tag, but, can't please everyone.

(oops -- *that tag* in the first sentence meaning whatever archive warning applies in that situation. My brain is fried tonight I guess)

I also tend to use it for borderline cases, especially when it comes to the lack of any useful consensus on what counts as “underage.”

He's only ninety-nine years old and his boyfriend is 100! Age gap means it's PEDO!!!!!ELEVENTYONE!

There is a consensus, though: under 18.

oh look, a casual google:

"Denmark. The age of consent in the Kingdom of Denmark is 15 as specified by Section 222: § 222. Whoever has sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 15, shall be punished by imprisonment for up to 8 years, unless the situation is covered by § 216 paragraph 2."

AYRT

18 is the consensus norm on AO3 specifically.

I get what you’re trying to say, but anon above me is right that 18 isn’t the age of consent in most non-American countries.

Hell, 18 isn’t the age of consent in some American states!

Not even legally universal lol. And then there’s the lack of any consensus over whether it’s just supposed to apply to statutory age differences, or when both are kids, or how sexual or explicit it has to get for it to matter, etc.

Form AO3’s FAQ: (https://archiveofourown.org/faq/tutorial-posting-a-work-on-ao3?language_id=en#pwtwarnings)

Underage

This is for descriptions or depictions of sexual activity by characters under the age of eighteen (this doesn't include dating activity like kissing or vague references with no actual description/depiction). This generally applies to humans; if you are writing porn about space aliens who only live for a month or thousand year-old vampires with sixteen year-old bodies, please just use your best judgment. You are always free to specify characters' ages or to use "Choose Not to Use Archive Warnings".

I’ve consulted the AO3 policy in the past and I still find that there are vague borderline cases (or ones where there isn’t a canon age but they could be underage), and I’ve come across people who clearly don’t know where AO3 draws the line because they haven’t read the terms, which makes the policy not a consensus in any realm even if it would be fair enough to treat it as one. If I have to consider for longer than I want to whether it would apply for a significant number of people, I just choose not to warn.

I sometimes use the CNTW tag on completely innocent T-rated fics, because I just don't want hypersensitive readers. Quality, not quantity.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-08 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s a perfectly fine strategy, I suppose.

But I don’t know how I feel about you saying “quality vs quantity” about actual people. Mostly the “quality” part. Someone might be hypersensitive, but that doesn’t mean that they’re a lesser being. Just annoying.
