I agree mostly with your point of view, but I'm tired of the anti-this, anti-that snipe. If you push this sort of story to the mainstream audience, there's always going to be people who just won't like it, and they're not going to be the hyperonline sort of people you're thinking of. It's neat that the book found critical acclaim enough to have a movie made out of it, but people who had negative opinions about the movies aren't all part of secret cabal of twitter users.

Secret... cabal... of twitter users?

This secret-poster is mad about this movie in a highly specific hyperonline way, which they have posted... online. I very much doubt that the majority of people who didn't like the movie, or had criticisms of it, are posting about how it's "dangerous" on fandom!secrets in 2021.

I'm talking about OP's statement in the secret itself: "I've heard too many straight people talk about how Teh Gayz are predators at all touched by it." Say what you want about antis, but thinking that gay people are predators is not an anti thing. That sort of homophobia sounds like it's more like from 'regular IRL people.'

Here you go. Have a "gay people are pedos" joke video that has nothing to do with antis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScqLzc-p9Lg

I never said, and do not think, that antis think gay people are predators, and I am not going to watch a video joking about gay people being predators, what the fuck.

"Antis" are, by general agreement, people with an outsize and aggressive views of relatively tame media being "dangerous," frequently along lines of "this is bad representation," which is what this secret is about. If you don't like the terminology or don't agree with my informal definition that's fine; feel free to replace "antis" with "puritanical fandom pearl-clutchers" or "people who post shit like this."

"I am not going to watch a video joking about gay people being predators, what the fuck." What the fuck, indeed. (: It's kinda messed up that this is still how gay men are viewed to some people, isn't it?

Let's agree to disagree on this. I and OP encounter enough people not attached to any sort of fandom or woke crowd who'd love to have their biases confirmed and joke about it, and you don't see any sort of the jokes IRL. I still support the idea of the book exploring one young man's self-discovery about their homosexuality, but I do not agree with how the movie executed its themes by making it a true mutual love story. Farewell.

No idea what we were disagreeing about in the first place, because it definitely was not that people IRL think gay people are predators. I am extremely aware of that, thank you. Goodbye.
