Fucked up that people fantasize about killing a mentally ill person

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

I'm just generally tired of the Joker. I don't give a shit about him and hate seeing him in freaking everything.

THIS

I mean, this with about two dozen characters I could name, but this guy especially.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I feel this way about Batman characters in general. DC has so many interesting characters they could use, but no let's make another Batman movie.

The fact that his butler and car got their own shows before some of their other prominent heroes just goes to show they intend to bleed this franchise to the very last drop.

Nah, I like the no killing thing. It's the only fully consistent bit of characterisation. Even with the Joker - and besides, I've always figured Dick or Tim would end up killing him one day in some ~dramatique~ betrayal of Bruce's legacy at the end of some convoluted descent into grittiness until it gets rebooted or retconned.

The whole idea of making the superhero genre morally or physically realistic is just so obviously doomed. The genre conceits exist for a reason; the genre would not be able to exist without them. They're load-bearing. You can have specific individual works that pose the question of what superheroes would be like if they were morally, physically or psychologically realistic, but it doesn't work for the genre as a whole.

SA.

Absolutely. Gritty realism doesn't hold up in a genre filled with aliens, magic, pseudoscience and people who put on costumes to male life better for people and actually manage it. It's the ideas behind it and the escapism that matter.

Dick killed him but Batman brought him back.

Nah, I'm fine with Batman himself not killing the Joker. The no-kill rule works fine with Bruce's whole deal. I do wish someone would perma-kill the Joker, though. Not even an important someone. Just some petrified Gotham civilian who managed to get a hold of a gun at the right/wrong moment and just ... blew his brains out before anyone knew what happened. I think that would actually really work as a story. Cut right through the ritualistic superhero vs supervillain stuff, and bring it all the way back to Crime Alley and a guy with a gun. The Joker getting his comeuppance from the city he terrorised, the cosmic joke of it just being some dude, some scared kid or other, and Bruce dealing with just ... another body in a Gotham alley in front of him. Stymied by the fact that, in the Joker's particular case, it was clearly self-defense. Nowhere to go, no justice to seek, because sometimes Gotham just kills people, and no one in their right mind would blame any scared civilian for shooting the Joker.

I like how you think, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I would absolutely love this story.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, I would read the hell out of that

I like this a lot.

This is exactly what I've wanted a Joker story to be for a long time. No big twist, no Joker Immunity, just kill the bad guy and leave it at that. If every other Batman story needs to be about how he's as much a symbol as a man, let the Joker turn out to be just a man, not an unkillable boogeyman.

According to Joker’s Favor, this is what the Joker is actually scared of. Being killed by “a miserable little nobody.”

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m with you, OP. My favorite are fics where someone kills the Joker *for* Jason and/or Barbara.

Tim, Dick, Roy, even Alfred or once Phil Coulson.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yo, can you share that Phil Coulson one?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It’s not until the end, the fic is mostly about Phil Coulson bringing Jason Todd to work for SHIELD as a freelancer and Coulson generally trying to support him.

I stopped reading comics a while ago, and part of it was because of how meaningless death was. Batman could kill Joker and it wouldn't change anything. He's been dead before. They both have. Popular characters just aren't going to stay dead. They've actually joked about it in the X-Men comics.
