I mean... it's hard to complain that so many fans are into the juggernaut canon gay pairing, thus leading to a lot of fic about that extremely popular pairing. Did the author(s) not tag for "wangxian"?

Spoken like someone who's never been interested in characters outside of the main juggernaut ship.

"It's hard to complain that so many people are into the juggernaut ship"... unless you're not into it yourself. Then it's a pretty natural thing to complain about the oversaturation of content for the one thing you're not interested in, to the exclusion of literally anything else.

But as the person below said there's tons of fics for other pairings. My OTP in this fandom isn't even in the top ten of popularity on AO3 and I still have a huge backlog of fics I haven't had a chance to read yet.

I'm not unsympathetic. It just seems odd to act like it's unreasonable for the very, popular canon gay pairing to be also very popular in fanfic, too - and to chastise the fans who like this pairing for not writing stuff to suit the OP rather than... I don't know, themselves?

LOL - oversaturation. Seriously? When the story and the fandom is primarily focused on that pairing?

... I don't really check the fics anymore but I feel like The Untamed has TONS of fics where Wangxian is not the focus? Sure they're often still in the fic, but more in the backround? (I do think the fandom has probably a slight tagging problem, where every ship/character gets tagged no matter the importance)

I was wondering this myself. I haven't really explored fanfic much, but there's a lot of love for other characters besides the two leads on Tumblr?

But (as you allude to, and this also depends on website I guess) the way that tagging usually works means that it's often a total nightmare to try to find fic that includes your pairing as the primary pairing and the juggernaut as the background pairing

But that's a problem with the tagging, not with those fics not existing.

I for one have to filter out most of the Jiang Cheng ship fics out when I look for my preferred ships and that already eliminates hundreds of fics and Idk where it's just mentioned is passing or gets focus.

I don't have anything against Wangxian - except when it's college AU or something that has basically nothing to do with The Untamed or MDZS -, but I loathe the fact that OT3 is so prominent in the English speaking part of the fandom.

I don't give a fuck about NMJ. Where is all the Xiyao? They're so much more interesting and almost canon and they're like the perfect foil to Wangxian. It doesn't make any sense to add bloody NMJ to that!

See, I'm the opposite. I can't for the life of me picture Xichen and sex (mostly I just feel so bad for him, poor guy). NMJ though.... (yes I'm in this for shallow reasons, I admit that).

I am so deeply squicked by Xiyao. The huge discrepancy between how horribly JGY lied to/exploited/hurt LXC while telling himself that he loved him, compared to how much LXC genuinely loved and trusted him, is like...repulsive to me. Actively painful to consider.

Nieyao on the other hand is delicious and fantastic because the intimacy ending in juicy betrayals and hurts is a lot more equal.

bro, they weren't even talking about nieyao, they were talking about the ot3. but by all means try to argue how one toxic ship is somehow less bad than another toxic ship. xD

And I like LXC/JGY precisely for all those horrible, horrible reasons that hit the fucked-up enjoyment part of my brain just right, while NMJ/JGY doesn't work for me on any level because I am never able to see belligerent unrelenting hatred as anything remotely close to sexual tension. Because as you said: different tastes.

I'm just neutrally disinterested in Wangxian and I was only into the fandom for a little bit before I wandered off, but I didn't have much of an issue mostly avoiding the ship in the LXC/JGY corner, if anything I had to block an OT3 tag with NMJ because for some reason that side of things expected everyone to ship them as a throuple which, alright, but not my speed.

I also just didn't go into the main bulk of the fandom either because I 1. didn't care for the main draw, and 2. rolled my eyes at some of the common opinions to some of the side-characters from those shippers so learned early on to cut my losses and stick to the LXC/JGY side of Ao3/twitter and I had a good time for the handful of months I dossed around on that side.

Huh, I only look for MDZS fic on AO3 while filtering to exclude the LWJ/WWX tag and there's still tons for fic? More than 24k works last time I checked. Untamed itself is smaller but taking out that pairing still leaves more than 15k. Not sure what pairing you're interested in but many have between 1-3k. Maybe it's because I'm used to smaller fandoms, but I'd consider that still a lot to read.

i mean i don't ship it but it's really easy to ignore? like unless you're shipping one of them with another person you can actually pretty much avoid the ship if you want to, i do it all the time without trying.

I can understand why that's disappointing for you (I also find expansion of canon fic or side character stories have some of the most interesting compelling writing and that's true of professionally published "fic" especially) but I do not think fic's draw is about expansion. i think fic's draw is about the pleasure of more content, which sometimes is about expansion and sometimes, frankly most of the time, is about the main relationship draw of the medium.

+1 There are few fandoms I actively seek out fic for, but unanimously it's a feeling of "oooh more of this!" that I'm looking for.

Meanwhile I love the juggernaut pairing yet am constantly turned off by the untagged and icky xiyao. Gotta take the good with the bad and remind yourself it’s not anyone’s responsibility to write what you want to see.

I'm a bit lost at the logic that something that's popularity draws from the main canon pairing is problematic. Fanfic is generally a way for fans to continue to indulge in what they like from canon.

It's just amusing to see someone complaining that no one is writing enough fic about characters that don't interest them, or the third spear carrier from the left.
