I have those books with those exact covers, I think I need to go read them again.

I never really got the romance at the time, but I remember liking that Daine got who she wanted rather than being involved in a boring love triangle and having to pick the best of a dull bunch of men who wanted her. If that makes sense.

tamora pierce really loves her age gaps, considering alanna.

i really dislike it with daine, especially because she immediately knocks up her female characters after they get married and barely legal girls getting pregnant is just a huge squick (i don't like pregnancy in general). their whole romance drama is also focused on him being like "woe you want someone young and sprightly as yourself" and her reassuring him which is ughhhh so unattractive.

you do you

Actually in Canon they don't have kids until Daine is (iirc) 24, and she refuses to marry Numair until she practically pops the first kid out.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
i must have confused it with trickster's choice. sorry daine! i remembered someone immediately being pregnant in the epilogue and i guess i was thinking of alianne and her triplets

I’ve never heard of those but if she ages through the series then I think I would love these and totally ship it.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Same! Though it sounds like they get married pretty quick after getting together and then she gets pregnant like right away, which I am much, much less into. Massive so-wrong-its-right age gap (with what sounds like possible mentor/mentee elements)? Hell yes. But matrimony and babies when the girl isn't even out of her teens just screams major traditionalist vibes to me, and that's a hard pass.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Anon above you is misremembering canon. They don't get married for I wanna say 8 years, and only do so after she's pregnant (in her mid-20s).

Comment but not secret OP here and they're definitely aimed at a youngish YA target audience, especially by modern YA standards.

They're fun, and the universe they're set in has quite a few series focusing on different characters.

The preceding series to The Immortals, The Song of the Lioness, focuses on a girl who wants to become a knight, and the characters from it show up in The Immortals, who show up in the next series The Protector of the Small, and so on, but you don't have to read the prior series to know what's going on.

Yeaaaah, and Daine is, what, sixteen or seventeen when they get together? It's... not great.

While I'm reading it, I dig it, because I dig Numair but as soon as I step out of Daine's pov and think about it uuuuuuuugh.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
uuuuuuuuugh

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it only really works if you view it from the perspective of the younger person because otherwise hahahahah gross.

AYRT

Oh, yeah, definitely. I first read these books when I was about 14 and I was ALL IN on the romance. Now that I'm hitting thirty? It hits a lot differently. I still love these books but I have incredibly complicated feelings on this pairing. I loved Daine and Numair as a kid and shipped them hard. As an adult, I go 'wtf Numair, I don't care how much she wants you, shut her down, that's gross', but there's always a part of me that's weirdly fond of the ship anyway, just because when I was Daine's age, I was totally on her side of things.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is me. I hadn't thought about this series in forever, but yeah, looking at it as an adult, it's pretty skeevy on Numair's part.

I read Kel's books first (backwards, I know) so my first impression of Daine and Numair were as established adults who loved each other very much, and I thought nothing of it at the time and thought she sounded cool. By the time I actually read Daine's books, I was much older and going "Wait, he's HOW old compared to her? What?" and couldn't get into the ship at all.

Then again, the number of books I've stumbled across with that type of pairing in this genre...can't say it's that surprising, just not what I'd expected in my head.

Comment OP here, and I get that. I'm pushing 40 now and if a 30 year old dude I knew IRL was claiming to be in love with a 16 year old he'd been tutoring for three years I'd flip the fuck out and report his ass, and I can't imagine being attracted to a teenager myself. Ew. I wasn't attracted to them when I was one.

I figure it turning out okay is as much a fantasy as the magic and talking to animals and so on.

Even as a young teen I would've been creeped out by a 30 year old saying he loved me, maybe especially a teacher.

I love(d) the idea of older man/teen or barely out of teens girl, but I also loved reading wilderness survival stories, but had no desire to actually have to keep myself alive for months or years in the woods.

Somewhat unrelated: I hate it when the author's name is so huge compared to the title of the book. And the font makes it look like TA MOR A PIERCE.

I think you're right it's about the fact that this is an older series, but don't worry if they ever adapt this and keep the ages as it (they probably won't but if they do), it'll get flack then!

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda hate that anti is both used for people who don't agree to every single ship out there, and also for people who harass others. At this point, the people who called you antis are the antis.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, all these comments certainly are proving this one's need to be a secret XD

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
What comment section are you reading? Because the comments I'm seeing are a good mix of mostly fairly reasonable viewpoints, stated civilly.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for turning my comment (and footnote) into a secret, OP!

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
These are some of my favorite books, and age gaps have never bothered me, like, at all, but I never realized how much may have been due to the stuff that I read growing up until I was talking to a friend about it and going through my bookcase and noticed the age gap in these and some other books(*cough*Anne McCaffrey*cough*). Though looking at the official timeline, looks like there's only supposed to be an 11 year age gap between Daine and Numair which is definitely nowhere near the worst that I've shipped.

Actually, just now realizing that like 90% of what I ship would be considered "problematic" in some way. Uh, yeah... this one is pretty tame by comparison.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I forget what the age difference is in Alanna (not enough to strike me when I read the whole series as a 13-year-old) but even when I was a kid reading Wolf Speaker I was extremely put off by the (implied?) romance and finding out Numair was into Daine like that. Nope nope nope. Don't have an opinion on ship wars or antis because I don't do fandom but I'm with you OP, this pairing is...yikes.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here, and I actually ship them? Which I thought was obvious from the secret, but rereading I see how you got "yikes" from it.

IRL I would absolutely be disgusted by anything similar, and I can't imagine being into a teenager myself.
