101. I've heard this complaint about Pixar before, and I just don't get it. Are the female characters just TOO awesome for you? 8(

LOL@pretending Wall-E was about two lesbian robots though. I've been playing around with a similar idea, except Eve has become Steve. 8P

101. well the only thing is that there aren't any prominently strong woman that are consistently strong/don't have to be saved. I'd say Elastagirl is like this but then she takes on the whole persona of the weak wife. But still, I find this to be the case with most mediums so I guess I don't particularly see this as a Pixar thing as much as a general problem in the representation of women in media in general?

Elasticgirl, weak wife? D: True she settles down as your average mom but that's really only because she had to hold the family together and keep them away from trouble. In fact I'd even argue that she was basically The Man of the house, and not really just "some weak wife".

Plus she eventually rekindles her strong hero self and makes a move to save her own husband's ass when he was busy playing super hero 8D; come on, she deserves a little more credit than that!

*such a guilty diehard fan of The Incredibles and especially Elastic Girl <3*

Oh don't worry, I love her but she slightly falls into an archetype. I meant it more that she is weak in the sense that she falls victim to her husband's supposed lies etc which shows her at first as this abandoned and insecure person. (Which makes her real, but unfortuantely girls don't like to see these weaknesses within themselvse =P)

The Incredibles has to be one of my favorite 3d films of all time! (Although Coraline and it are going at it in my brain XD I'll have to see Coraline again to fully judge.)

But honestly she is far better than a lot of the shitty females that are reproduced in a lot of media *sigh* I cling to my strong females when i catch hold of them =)

Ah, valid point P;

I haven't seen Coraline and to be even more honest, I've never heard of it - is it by Pixar too?

I know! I absolutely agree. She is definately one of the rare female characters out there that I can proudly admit of being a major fan of. At least we're taking a step in the right direction!

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
She does remind me of my own mother, which is why I like her.

Coraline is producted by LAIKA which is a relatively unknown company, but it was really beautifully done stop-motion.

I actually love Coraline as well as a female character. It's a nice thing to have a popularized animated movie with a main female character who isn't a princess. (I mean its been that way since mulan)

Not OP

I think it's more that Pixar movies are kind of a boy's club--no lead female characters, don't even approach passing the Bechdel test (I haven't seen The Incredibles yet (god knows why), but I think that one might), loads of important male characters and few females, etc. Pixar's done a lot better with female characters since, say, Toy Story (EVE > everything), but they could do so much more if they had a variety of interesting female characters as wide as their variety of interesting male characters.
