Okay, I have seen this same basic sentiment said about Sirius/Remus, House/Wilson, and now Chandler/Joey. That "braver choices" line is BULLSHIT. The creators and writers of these characters are not doing any disservice to their readers and viewers by not making your OTP canon.

Not everyone even sees these pairings as having romantic potential. I never saw any subtext for Sirius/Remus and the other two play the bromance for laughs. Nobody owes you the great epic gay love story that you think will revolutionize entertainment.

There's nothing wrong with wanting it, just like there is nothing wrong with a fan wanting his or her favorite het pairing to be canon. But it is not a matter of "braver choices." To say that implies that it is cowardly for them not to, that they would be better writers to make characters gay that they never intended to be.

It's not about making the characters gay. It's about the level of chemistry between the actors. I often thought that Monica and Ross had a great chemistry, but not in the brother/sister way, and if I had been new to the show during the later seasons I would have wondered why they weren't a couple. The same for Chandler and Joey. They had incredible chemistry together, moreso than they did with their romantic interests, which is why I think the writers could have looked at the characters and picked pairings based on chemistry (okay not Ross/Monica, that's a whole world of NO) instead of taking the safe 'let's pair 'em up boy/girl, boy/girl boy/girl' path.

I don't know about any other fandoms but this is exactly what happened with Jet and Zuko in A:TLA, so I'm sure OP has some basis.

Total agreement.

I think I'd have been severely dissapointed if the writers gave into people shouting they made a gay couple, although that's probably boarding on the other end of the selfish spectrum.

Was there shouting about pairings for Friends? The few comments I ever saw about the show was the improbability of them renting that sort of apartment and the lack of color in the cast.

A little, from what I do admittedly vaguely remember. I only got internets during the last year or two of the show and I didn't keep up with Entertainment Tonight or anything like that.

Huh what was so strange about them renting that apartment, do you remember?

The size of the apartment, it's layout and it's location (I think) given that most of the time they were on low on no incomes. Even sharing the costs three ways would have been a very expensive exercise, in the real world.

Oh yea, I mildy wonder about that too. Maintaining a tiny apartment with one person is hard enough on the wallet...I think I either decided they had secret savings somewhere they used, or didn't think about it at all.
