This. And what sucks is that it makes it hard when you actually DO hate a female character for legit reasons, because people will automatically jump you and accuse you of being one of THOSE slash fans. Uh, no, I just happen to dislike that particular character, that's all. Thanks for ruining it for everyone else, guys.

I feel like this all the time. I also hate it when I REALLY don't like a canon het couple, but feel like people are going to think I hate it because it's het.

I am fine with canon het couples, I expect them! I know they're the norm, I do not feel threatened by them. And I can have perfectly valid reasons for hating them beyond that they don't both have dicks.

OH GOD SO MUCH WORD. Right now I'm really into a fandom where I cannot stand the canon het pairing (and I'm normally a pretty devout canon shipper). It just didn't do it for me on so many levels-- but it just so happens that I prefer a (very subtexty) slash pairing instead.

No, I do not hate the canon het pairing because I like the slash pairing; I like the slash pairing because I hate the canon het pairing. There's a big difference between the two.

I'm probably kind of an odd slasher because.... canon is canon, and fanfic is fanfic, and I am FINE with there being a great wall between the two.

Or... Like in Stargate Atlantis, they had an AWESOME Doctor, and he DID STUFF, and made diagnoses, and used alien stem cells to do freaky things, and all sorts of awesome stuff! And then they got a female doctor and...... I've only seen a few episodes, but the ONLY thing she did was be Female Potential Love Interest. They even set up this HUGE teaser that OMG she was going to have to perform brain surgery in a cave on a planet with the enemy all around!!!!!! And nooo, she's been fighting against taking the person to the cave and OMG BRAIN SURGERY!!11!1eleventyone! And.. she gets there and lol, all she has to do is make a tiny papercut on the person and they're healed, good as new! No actual medical stuff required. And so I just want to scream that if they had her DOING stuff she wouldn't just come across as a nearby vagina.

And so many shows don't realize that the WORST thing to do to a female character the fans are either neutral towards or dislike is... turn them into The Wesley http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWesley

With me, I normally do like the canon pairings, it's just that once in a long while there's one that rubs me the wrong way for whatever reason. In this case, I thought that the main character had FAR more chemistry with another male character (my god, there's even a scene where he's thinking about the fact that another character had to kill a loved one and then he immediately wonders if he could kill said other male character if he had to, only to quickly stammer "I mean, I'm not in love with him or anything! Um, not that I don't like him or anything... actually, I like him a lot!") than he did with Canon Female Love Interest. And, from the look of it, a large portion of the fandom also agrees that the romance was handled badly, so it's really not a case of me having slash goggles on.
