But I also think part of fandom's intense focus on the males stems from the females being less interesting than the males, due to the latent sexism of the creators that shows up in the work.

I think it has less to do with sexism and more of they have no idea how to write female characters which can be chalked up due to laziness. Mind you, most of these writers are men as well as the editors. It's easier for them to go with stereotypes than do the research needed to write interesting female characters.

For example, the women in Kill Bill were amazing as well as the dialog in Death Proof. It felt real and not just a rehash of the same female dialog that we get in every other movie. But then Tarantino has gone on record saying that vast majority of people he hangs out with are women. He knows how they talk and what they do. Which is basically, alot like men. He gets that while we like pretty clothes and looking feminine but we also like fast cars and driving said fast cars while pretending to be the female version of Steve McQueen.

But, again, writing such thing takes research. And, frankly, if you watch television or read books and comics these days, research is often ignored. (I am looking at you Heroes with your concept of time travel that doesn't adhere to anything real.)

That's true, I need to give the benefit of the doubt. There's many creative minds in Hollywood pushing for greater social justice, and...yeah, men and women can be clueless about each other in real life so it's reasonable that that would seep into fiction too.

But then I read stories like this one (http://thehathorlegacy.com/why-film-schools-teach-screenwriters-not-to-pass-the-bechdel-test/) that make me doubt some of the writers' innocence all over again. According to this writer, film schools are actively teaching students that male audiences won't tolerate women who drive the story, because supposedly all women talk about fashion and babies. (But to be fair, this tale only applies to Hollywood. TV and books tend to be kinder to females than mainstream Hollywood films.)

I haven't seen Tarantino's work, but it sounds like he's bucking those trends. And that's awesome---I'll have to put aside some time to check out his films.

Well, Kill Bill and Death Proof both pass the Bechdel test. So, at least you have that down.

And those writing professors are morons. Honestly, morons. People want interesting characters over anything else. Interesting beats race, age and gender always. That's why people liked Buffy. Not because she was a teenaged girl. But because she was a vampire slayer with interesting dialog. Take away the monsters and give her trite dialog and no one would have given her a second glance.

Oh, god. You're worrying about Heroes and time travel? Did you see the business with the eclipse? Which apparently lasted for like hours, and was visible in the American Midwest and Haiti and New York all at the same time?

Oh, I didn't forget that. In fact, I could sit here and write a laundry list of all the wrong things about that show without even mentioning characters themselves. I swear, those writers have never cracked open a history book, a science book or an atlas in their life.

Lol. I just hit one of those Twilight Zone moments of subjective disconnect. I was nodding along with you right up until the bit about the believable dialogue in Deathproof. Because I have never in my life been so struck by the thought that the writers and director hadn't the faintest clue how women talk to each other without a man present than I had watching Deathproof. It seriously jarred me so much that it was almost the only lasting impression I took away from the whole film.

Now, that's interesting, because I had the exact opposite impression - sure, there's the Tarantino trademark logorrhea (which applies to ALL of his characters) and you seldom find a group of people where everyone talks so much, but heck, those girls in Death Proof sounded a lot like me and my female friends on a night out. So I guess it all boils down to personal experience/social circles/whatever.

Lol, I'm the one who curses XD I remember when I was sharing a flat with other four girls, and we had this male friend who visited quite often and often ended up half fascinated, half weirded out by our all girls (+ him, but we didn't really count him as a sexual entity XD) rambling, because it wasn't how girls are supposed to talk and act like. But that's how we were, despite not having much of a history together, either. We held burping contests, for crying out loud! We were just very relaxed around each other.
