I'm not a big fan of the McElroys (don't necessarily have a personal problem with them but I don't understand how they got so popular, and admittedly that level of popularity has made their shows off-putting for me so I probably won't ever take the time to listen) and I agree that their voices are a bit grating, but I think that's less of an issue when you like the person speaking. Across the internet there are all kinds of accents that range from irritating to just difficult to understand (for many), but that becomes a charm point when you're smitten with them. This isn't exactly the same phenomena but I listen to podcasts where friends say they can't tell any of the voices apart and it's clear that they aren't grabbed by the show. Obviously when you listen to something regularly, you can tell them apart without issue, so it becomes a harder barrier to relate to even when you logically understand it.

i've definitely found youtubers that were absolutely my jam but because of their voices/way of speaking i had to give up on watching them because it was just too distracting.
i don't think it would be bad in a conversation, but when someone is talking -at- you for a long time it's not as easy to dismiss that kind of thing
