This is my problem with a lot of podcasts tbh. The content sounds interesting, but the voice(s) put me off.

I don't find them annoying, but I can't tell them apart at all. Though I've only tried "The Adventure Zone". Which I stopped because I can never tell who's doing what so I can't get attached to the characters at all. This is not a problem I've had in other actual play podcats.

Totally agree, though I kept listening until one day I just lost interest with the story. But the whole time I mostly picked up who was talking from context, not because I could actually tell the voices apart.

I think that's part of the appeal? Sort of how like people complain that celebrities in Hollywood look all the same, and how movie and tv production in other countries have more diverse looks in terms of facial features (fans of telenovelas, please don't @ me). I honestly started to feel better about my own voice and odds of starting a podcast hearing them, not in a mean way, but in a "maybe people will like me too?" way.

I can handle them in tiny doses (like, cute fan animatics), but there's something about them that's off-putting to me. (It doesn't help that Justin's persona in Sawbones is grating as fuck. It feels like the auditory equivalent of the Dreamworks face.)

Lmao

Justin on Sawbones has grown on me! It was super annoying at first, but now...it's one of the things I look forward to, NGL (it's comforting at this point, as is Sidney's). But Sawbones is the only McElroy podcast I listen to. So I have no idea what the brothers sound like. DreamWorks face is a description lol. It just sounds very cheesy. But I doubt there's much he can do about it *shrug*

I'm not a big fan of the McElroys (don't necessarily have a personal problem with them but I don't understand how they got so popular, and admittedly that level of popularity has made their shows off-putting for me so I probably won't ever take the time to listen) and I agree that their voices are a bit grating, but I think that's less of an issue when you like the person speaking. Across the internet there are all kinds of accents that range from irritating to just difficult to understand (for many), but that becomes a charm point when you're smitten with them. This isn't exactly the same phenomena but I listen to podcasts where friends say they can't tell any of the voices apart and it's clear that they aren't grabbed by the show. Obviously when you listen to something regularly, you can tell them apart without issue, so it becomes a harder barrier to relate to even when you logically understand it.

i've definitely found youtubers that were absolutely my jam but because of their voices/way of speaking i had to give up on watching them because it was just too distracting.
i don't think it would be bad in a conversation, but when someone is talking -at- you for a long time it's not as easy to dismiss that kind of thing

I liked their shows with Polygon like Monster Factory, PeaceCraft, that car one with the sexpest, and the Skyrim one also with the sexpest, but I got 9 episodes into Adventure Zone before I realized holy fuck I did NOT care.

Apparently I need video game footage for me to find them palpable.

At first I laughed because, lol, that's a fair cop. But I think it's easy to see how they got popular: they got in relatively early, they have a huge back catalogue for bingeing, they're fun/funny, and they obviously enjoy each other. That goes a long way! (especially the last, imo)

I'm English and I know what you mean, but I also enjoy the kind of unusual Virginian accent, especially from Sidney.
