It's real. I know someone whose life was destroyed utterly by it. Basically, there was a period of denialism where I live about Lyme-carrying ticks, and while she was clearly infected, the doctors did not believe her in enough time to treat it properly. She now has seizures and went from being a very active person to completely housebound.

A year or two later, and they admitted that the ticks exist here, and there was a big public service campaign to alert people to the danger. But it's too late for my friend.

That's not what the "chronic Lyme" people are talking about, though. Your friend had an actual, documented Lyme infection and the medical treatment was fucked up. The "chronic Lyme" thing is people who have never had a Lyme infection, didn't get treated because they weren't infected, and then develop chronic fatigue symptoms but consider themselves too special to get chronic fatigue.

Ah, valid. I assumed that they were talking about the kind of thing that happened to my friend, which is horrifying.
