Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

I wrote a pretty popular story in the Once Upon a Time fandom a decade ago. I promised a sequel, which delighted the fans of the fic.

But I never wrote it.

I have the prologue written, have for about six or seven years. I have the whole story plotted. I know exactly what's going to happen, to whom, and in what order. I even have a third story in the series planned out. But I never wrote the sequel.

Because the plot hinges on Tia Dalma and I don't know how to write the way she talks.

I can't write dialect because that's racist as fuck but I can't write her speaking "typical English" because that's not her character. I never knew what to do so I just abandoned the story. I'm sorry, fans.

I'm going to piss off #3 OP, but...

I think you're confusing writing a dialect with using phonetic spelling to write an accent. Writing a dialect isn't racist.

1. Writing a dialect (for the sake of an example, let's use stereotypical US Southern): Well, I'll be darned, I ain't never seen nothing like that before!
2. Writing a phonetic accent: Well, Ah'll be durrned, Ah ain't nevah seen nuthin' lahk thayt befoah!

Something like 1 shouldn't be a problem, whatever dialect your character speaks. Just don't do 2.

I just feel so racist just writing her turns of phrase and things and like the character is pretty questionable in general, even in the series she's from, but she works so well for the story...
