I personally love Ryuji and Morgana and like the conflict that they had. I do not like Akechi, except for totally unhinged Akechi, mostly because he becomes so over the top that it's funny.

People like Morgana? I haven't dabbled in p5 fandom in a long time but I thought the general consensus was Morgana was annoying and everyone was relieved when he threw a hissy fit and left the party.

Yeah no, Ryuji is clearly Joker’s best friend. Morgana is Joker’s closest confidante. There’s a difference.

I think both Ryuji and Morgana stans are annoying because of shit like this where they quickly devolve into “You’re just mad that Ryuji/Morgana is...”.

Or... People just don't like his lack of volume control that really should have gotten them in trouble or how fast he loses sight of what he should have been doing with his PT powers. He's the first who thought of it for fame.

Part of me feels like this is bait but also come the fuck on. Feels like a damn parody of how Ryuji stans act. I want to like Ryuji, but like many Persona characters he falls prey to inconsistent writing on top of other flaws. I don't like his attention seeking and desire to leverage being a PT for clout, I don't care for how he talks to Morgana, and of all the characters he feels like he does the least to examine who he is at the beginning of the game in an attempt to grow. He feels like Atlus shoved Yosuke, Junpei, and Kanji in a blender and then ran it through a fine mesh sieve to get only the jerkiest parts with a slight backwash of their positive traits. At least Morgana apologizes for his inconsiderate behaviors, and Akechi makes no bones about being a dickhead who acknowledges that he is such; Ryuji is constantly low-level nasty to almost the entire party but laughs it off as "just a joke."

I really don't understand people who so vehemently hate fictional characters, and that's why I prefer to stay away from the part of the P5 fandom that discusses plot and charas: I've read one too many interpretations of this game born out of a clear dislike for this or that character, I've learned my lesson.

That said while I do generally like all characters (I was mostly indifferent to Akechi in vanilla, but Royal def made him far more enjoyable for me) I have to admit Ryuji is by far my favorite... But I also feel like I might be the weird one, considering I don't dislike the start of the Okumura arc and the fight that happens between him and Morgana.

I do think it was handled a tad clumsily, but I genuinely don't understand people who act like that fight came out of nowhere; the two often bickered and Morgana was shown more than once being doubtful about himself and his place in the Thieves long before the Okumura arc even approached. Yes, I agree that the entire thing felt a bit rushed, but I don't think it is entirely out of place. I do wish it had been handled better, though.

Coming back to Ryuji... It really saddens me that so many people in the fandom seems only to focus on his negative traits, I feel like his more positive traits are far more subtle and mostly overlooked. I really think he's been done dirty by the writing, because there are plenty of moments where it feels like his characters is inconsistent, and I dislike how he's been forcefully pushed in the comedic relief role, and then pretty much stuck there for the rest of the game.

I wouldn't have minded him being *a bit* of a comedy relief, but not *all the time*, and definitely not at the expense of what should have been moments where his character had a time to shine (we all know what I'm talking about). I also dislike the "pervy character" shtick, but since it IS there I decided to jot that down to Japanese writers really liking them pervy-chara trope and wholeheartedly ignore it like it doesn't happen... Or at least doesn't happen as often as it does in the game.

I also personally don't mind his wanting fame and recognition, and I feel like a lot of people get mad at him for that and forget there's genuine character growth on that front??? Like, 1- he's a 16 year old boy, him acting dumb shouldn't be a forever indictment of his character and 2- seriously, do people forget when he finally drops that act and realizes helping people by being a Phantom Thief is more important??? It's not even subtle, it's right there, in the text... Sometimes I really do feel like some people in this fandom are truly hellbent in hating him to the point of being completely blind to the moments where he's shown in a positive light. I don't get it.

Am I going anywhere with this? Idk, probably not really, I suppose I'm just surprised to see a P5 secret and want to add to the discussion lmao

Because he only finally TRULY drops it at the fucking end of the game. Like I get it, I like him, but he's also a character type that isn't that great. He's the loudmouth friend with no volume control who ONLY sees the "doing the right thing" choices as a way to get chicks and clout, which clashes horribly with his abuse background and him wanting to get into track not to be famous but to make sure his mom was taken care of.

I only know about this fandom from friends, but you sound like someone who thinks people are either all good or all bad. Why else would you think a person can't want to do good things for some selfish reasons (popularity) and also want to do another thing for a good reason (his mom)? A character like that sounds like... a normal person.

Ryuji is the best boy hands down, Morgana is cool, and Akechi is only liked as the villainous asshole that he is instead of the fake-ass uwu pancake boy. Give me asshole psycho Akechi from the 3rd semester instead of what we got for 2/3rd of the game.
