Realism is an aesthetic choice, and like any other aesthetic choice, whether you prefer it or not is simply a matter of taste. Realism isn't a thing that people intrinsically should care about.

Which makes it odd and annoying that people pat themselves on the back for not caring about realism while simultaneously implying that the people who do are whiny pedantic killjoys.

There's nothing wrong with preferring realism.

The problem is that, all too often, you see people act like realism is important in every context, and come into a situation where something clearly isn't trying to be realistic and act like everyone is supposed to accept that it's clearly shit for not being realistic. And those people are being whiny pedantic killjoys.

And my problem is that many people people assume that if you care about historical accuracy, you're a pedantic killjoy regardless of whether or not you made a nuisance of yourself about it.

damned if you do, damned if you don't. same goes for a movie not being enough like the book you love, or wanting a bit of screen-accuracy in your cosplay. it's my personal preference, but even if I'm keeping my mouth shut I've got the other side already expecting me to be mad about how wrong the movie is or showing me cosplay photos waiting for my angy critique. yes the latter did happen, and no I did not indulge the instigator. we're not friends anymore.

Oh geez, sorry that someone you once considered a friend acted like such a rude prick about this! :/

+1, realism is a choice - and it's also a marketing choice. If you tried to sell The Tudors as super historically accurate rather than SEXY SEXY TUDORS people would laugh at you.

You could very much do a reasonably historically accurate sexy sexy Tudors though. Like, that is a thing you could actually do, except people don't.

See, that's what I'd like to see! I prefer historically accurate things versus soaps with hot people and historic names slapped on.

My least favorite thing is when people go "but it's REALISTIC" when you express frustration with historical media having a ton of rape and sexual assault.
