How the fuck do you finish anything

Something longer running that likes killing off characters (like Boardwalk Empire or Supernatural)? I very rarely finish all the seasons. But I doubt I'm alone in that.

Sometimes I do keep up with things (like Legends of Tomorrow), but some small part of me is still salty about having lost a character.

Sometimes, I like most of the main characters, so there's no problem. Or the show isn't big on killing people off, which is great.
