AYRT

In the book, the main character has to pick the winner of an art contest for kids where the instructions were "Paint what you see when you look outside your bedroom window." Her assistants all like a painting by a girl from some New England state that shows a picturesque field with flowers and trees and a deer. But the MC decides it's so perfect it must be fake, and chooses a painting of a building wall with graffiti all over it. Never mind that homes like the former are extremely common in rural areas, deer and all. But noooooo the girl who painted that picture was lying about where she lived because how could anyone possibly live somewhere that's not a city dump.

IDK, preteen just felt right. Probably because I read the book as a youngish teenager and even then I thought its message was childish, so preteen it is.
