Eh. I guess I understand it because I make allowances for his upbringing. Lan Wangji was raised in the strictest sect, always under scrutiny because of who his parents were, always with incredibly high expectations that he tried to meet. Then his soulmate appears, but goes down what is for that world an incredibly dark path - he's doing things that LWJ has been taught are evil and forbidden and he tries to convince Wei Wuxian not to go there and to irreparably damage himself and his standing in the martial arts world, but he fails to convince WW. For even trying to stand up for his soulmate, LWJ faces a brutal physical and emotional punishment from his sect, and he still continues to beat himself up over that failure.

And he deeply, deeply regrets it for years, tries to atone and then when he's older and has more experience and perspective and has come to terms with things better, he does better. He makes a point of standing up for WW, no matter what. And he does.

This.

Plus he DID try to do more, and just didn't understand HOW to help someone who was actively pushing people away. It took him years AFTER it was too late to learn how to do better, and that SHOWS when he gets the second chance--he understands now what Wei Wuxian needs and how he needs to respond, which is a much better relationship model IMO than "does things perfectly without question the first time" (minus the death. obviously.)

he has perfectly cogent character reasons for being the way he is but that doesn't necessarily make it any more satisfying for a reader if 'cold and unexpressive' is something they hate in romantic leads

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh whatever.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
what's the point of this comment? You can type this in any thread.

Well I think the OP is kind of a moron, and wish to indicate this using language. *Eye roll*

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm OP.
I guess you're happy with yourself.

Same.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically, by your logic, Lan Wangji should have had zero opinions, morals, or personality of his own. Instead he should just have blindly thrown all in with Wei Ying from the start, just because he was attracted to him. Never mind that LWJ was the only one in the whole cultivation world to stand by his side when WWX returned.

Your interpretation allows for absolutely no characterisation on LWJs side and is not at all a healthy interpretation of what a relationship should be. Yeesh.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
it doesn't say logistical or moral support, the secret says EMOTIONAL support

to me it reads like OP just doesn't like the Stern Cold Aloof Love Interest trope and feels like actually saying a feeling out loud and smiling at your partner is, yknow, something they want for the character they DO like, which sounds a lot more healthy than whatever you're projecting onto them

'by your logic' - you're just wildly making up a strawman of your own invention here. it's not that he shouldn't have a personality of his own, it's that the personality he has is unpleasant

^^^ THIS

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to have a strange view on what constitutes a healthy interpretation of what a relationship should be.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Omplete subjugation of your own opinions and morals the instant you realise you're attracted to someone is NOT a healthy relationship.

I keep trying to find fic where WWX gets together with someone other than LWJ, but my choices are limited to "WWX/LWJ/third party" or Jiang Cheng, who is his brother ๏︿๏

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad but true.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
might be a few non 3some fics with him and Wen Ning?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I can't stand the type of character who is an obnoxious brat and borderline bully most of the time, especially if it's of the "pulling your pigtails cause I subconsciously like you and want your attention" variety.
But unlike you, I can understand that there is actually more to a character than the traits I hate and cherry picked from all of his traits just to make it sound like he's an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe OP just doesn’t like him, and his development was too late for them to warm up to him.

And that means that you’re maybe extrapolating a whole lot of how you think OP actually feels and thinks about the character from nothing but a few sentences in this secret. Seriously, what’s up with the second part of your comment? You’re pulling most of this hostile assumption from nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about a different character (the one OP believes "deserves better") and the second part - well, that's what OP is doing for LWJ in this secret - cherry picking some traits they don't like and ignoring all the rest of his characterisation and all context.

I love love love both novels, but it's comparing apples to oranges. The real common thread between MXTX couples is that someone is going to end up with a demon boyfriend and they're going to take unhealthy devotion and dial it up to 11.

Really, all the young masters of Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian's generation were screwed over emotionally by their families. Nie Huaisang/Nie Mingjue were arguably the most well-adjusted growing up, which is insane considering their cultivation style.

I swear I get your point and I don't hate LBG as much as most people from the Scum Villain fandom do. And yet, my favourite lost interest is by far Mobei Jun. Which I don't get because he's even worse than Lan Zhan when it comes to emotional support.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because he's literally Shang Qinghua's perfect man.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know, but the point is specifically that SQH is a bit of a masochist. And even he finds it too much to take in the extras.

Still I'm glad he gets his perfect man because he's my favourite character. Usually I tend to hate protagonists, especially WWX, but I really love the shous in Scum Villain, which may explain why it's my favourite novel by MXTX.
