I've definitely heard this theory, but I can't imagine how much that would suck. Gwen as political tool? No thanks. I'd hoped we could avoid that in this series since she isn't a noblewoman -- you would think that for the two of them to even be together, much less marry, given all the societal obstacles and pressure they'd face, they would almost have to be in love.

Meh. I just want everyone to be happy. *headdesk*

That would be kind of sad, wouldn't it? But maybe it would be a political move, combined with great mutual affection. I keep thinking of the 'Le Morte d'Arthur' ep where Arthur's call to arms to his knights is, "For the love of Camelot," and then later, when he's laying in bed, dying, and Gwen is talking to him, she's telling him of her hope for better days when he's king and repeats his words, "For the love of Camelot," and I thought it showed that there was this HUGE thing they have in common, this bond -- their mutual love of Camelot. So I think if TPTB deal with the marriage at all in this show, it could possibly be something that would come about as a way for both of them to serve and benefit Camelot in some way.

I just adore Gwen and she was so clearly smitten with Lancelot, and he with her (and we all know how that turns out in legend), so I guess maybe it's wishful thinking on my part that the show might establish that, while her loyalty may lie with Camelot, her heart could still belong to Lancelot. :)

I actually saw the scene in 1x13 in much the same way -- I think Gwen needed that scene, because she was given so little room to react to her father's death in the previous episode. And like you I didn't read it in an 'I'm in love with you' way, so much as a 'you make me believe that life can be better than this' way -- even though she's suffered more directly from Uther's rule than anyone else on the show. It was a very poignant moment.

And while I think that CAN transition into them growing closer as friends or as more, I do see your point, and that's a direction the show could potentially take. I'm just too much of a romantic for that to be good enough, I suppose. While she and Lancelot DID have chemistry, I want more for her than just being a member of a love triangle. And since I doubt the show is progressive enough to take the 'open-marriage' route, that's kind of where I see things heading. :/

Still, the show's given me some (possibly false) hope that the women might have more depth than the legends dictate.

Yes, exactly...not 'in love' but it sort of showed that she already loves him in the way that a devoted subject loves their king and sovereign. I would like to see a slow, sweet development into more, but the future affair with Lancelot is always at the back of my mind and I guess it's the romantic in me that prefers to think that her becoming involved with Lancelot would be because of true love, which would somehow (in *my* mind, at least) make it seem like less of a betrayal of Arthur if what the two of them have is based on friendship and a mutual love of Camelot. I don't know, lol. That probably makes no sense!
