It's the latter. I can see it with Merlin (and I can even see where he has a rather massive crush on Arthur), but I don't see it with Arthur, though he's obviously got a lot of trust and even love for Merlin. He'd go to the moon for Merlin, but he'd do that for anyone he cares about because that's who he is.

Just out of curiosity, what would either supposition say about me, based on just one sentence?

There is very little we can factually say about (this) Arthur. A lot of the non-verbal and visual cues on the show are hinting toward an intellect and depth that the actual spoken text doesn't necessarily portray. A lot of what we see in Arthur right now is an interpretation.

Now, personally, I consider Arthur to be functionally bisexual, as I do with most characters. I see chemistry with Merlin, Lancelot, Gwen and Morgana.

Supposition one tells me you're a very text-based reader (as opposed to sub-textual/interpretative) with heterosexual as default setting, and probably (possibly?) don't care much for Marion Zimmer Bradley's interpretation of Arthur and Lancelot's relationship. Supposition two tells me you're a script-based viewer (as opposed to non-verbal/visual) with heterosexual as a default setting. I don't mind being proven wrong, and I don't think those things are necessarily bad (I don't care much for MZB myself), it's just something I'd assume based on our limited interaction.

Now, I think at this point Arthur has had the chance to show his most intense reactions only in regards to Merlin. I would certainly welcome more Arthur being awesome for Gwen and Morgana, and maybe we'll get some of that in season two. But to my eyes, right now, Arthur being a queen is more "likely" than Arthur making Gwen Queen.

You're a lot more well-read than I am when it comes to this stuff (Once and Future and Gates of Avalon are about it for me), but I've definitely heard of different interpretations where Arthur and Lance were lovers and it doesn't seem far-fetched. I think Arthur loving Lance in some way or other is pretty much taken for granted based on my limited exposure. I hadn't given much thought to whether any version of Arthur is straight/gay/bi before participating in this fandom, but I suppose my default idea of him would have been straight or bisexual. My thoughts on Arthur before watching the show were basically that he loved Guinevere, he loved Lancelot, and Merlin was a mentor to him.

But needless to say, I wasn't really that into Arthurian myth before. ;)

Your interpretation of Arthur as bisexual could totally be the case. I do see chemistry between Arthur and nearly everyone he's interacted with, including Lancelot and Merlin, but I don't know if it's romantic even though imagining it/reading it in fic is fun.

Oh, I honestly haven't read as much as I could have! Some Mallory, very little of the stuff Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote. But as a child (even growing up in Germany, that may or may not earn me a couple extra points) I loved all iterations of the Arthur/Camelot myth. I mean, everything from the somewhat dark and brutal Excalibur movie to Sword in the Stone. I adored the Pendragon books by Stephen Lawhead and that's nothing if not straight ;) But you know, hanging around fandom as long as I have now, and getting into slash/discovering my own sexuality did away with the heteronormative assumption and I've no regrets (which is not to say that I don't ship het, because I do).

And I have to say, sad as that makes me sometimes, we're not going to see a gay Arthur on a Saturday afternoon family show. I wish that it were different, because there is nothing wrong or "adult" about gay characters, but it'll be a long time before we'll see a protagonist like Arthur Pendragon as anything other than heterosexual. (In that vein, from a meta perspective, Arthur/Gwen is indeed more likely than Arthur/Merlin, but so is Arthur/Nimueh or Arthur/unnamed chambermaid) And that is part of the reason why we write so much fic ;)
