Sounds like you're letting it get to you too much. Unless we're talking about the kind of BNF who organizes harassment campaigns on people who have a different perspective on the characters they like, there's really no reason why you shouldn't publish your own fic and ignore the BNF. You might even attract like-minded people who also dislike the BNF and are game to vent about them in private.

Kind of getting a "The problem might be you" vibe from this one. Or maybe a "Yes they're annoying but you have misanthropic tendencies" vibe.

*shrug* Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you just have bad luck with fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-29 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're necessarily wrong but there's basically no way to tell for sure one way or the other so who the hell knows

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
da Yeah. I see what people are saying in this thread, but I've also seen plenty of instances of BNFs being bullies when it comes to differing interpretations or things that don't fir their personal fanon. Just because someone in a BNF does not mean they are automatically a nice person.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I got that vibe too. If the BNFs were actually the kind of asshole who gets into harassment campaigns, that's one thing, but "unfriendly, irritating and has different takes on the characters" sounds deeply subjective. Which is fine! Everybody has people they don't like! But if you dwell on it so much you can't enjoy the stuff you do like in the fandom, well...

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, same. I don't really notice BNFs in medium-sized fandoms and certainly not on AO3. Why interact with the fandom on tumblr or whatever if you just want to post fic? Or post fic under a random new pseud.

Yep, happening in two different fandoms and letting it get to them enough it affects their own contributions and enjoyment? I get the same vibe. OP, it is super easy to ignore certain people, no matter how popular they are with others. Try it sometime.

Anon...

Just post your stuff. It's yours, your writting style and interpretation of characters is your own.

I think I've commented this before here, but whenever I post stories that arguable go against THE popular fan interpretations of certain characters, I get comments on my fics thanking me for going against the grain. I bet there are people out there who would like the perspective you bring to the table. (Or, putting it the salty way, there are probably other people who dislike the same BNFs you do.)

I mean, if they're "unfriendly" then why can't you avoid interacting with them? It kinda feels like you're afraid of interacting with fandom and you're using the BNFs as an excuse.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
They're unfriendly? Oh dear. They're irritating? Hm. They have different takes? Oh hon, I think the problem is not, ah, external?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
do your fandom platforms allow you to block other users? you could just block the bnfs. if it's ao3, there are codes you can use to hide certain people and their works (i don't have the codes but some other anon probably does).

i don't really see why you can't ignore them and post your contributions to the fandom. are you worried the bnfs will come harass you or leave negative comments? i imagine there are other people in the fandom who find the bnfs annoying or who would appreciate seeing new content.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
You can post your stuff without interacting with fandom. That's what I do. I mean, I interact as far as replying to comments, but I don't read fic or look at art or join discussions for the one fandom I write in. The only thing I want to do is WRITE. It took me a while to be okay with that and not feel guilty for "not doing fandom right" (or, before that, to force myself to participate when I really didn't want to). There IS no right or wrong as far as what interests you and what doesn't. It just is what it is.

If you're afraid a BNF will leave nasty comments... well, I suppose they might. Plenty of assholes out there would rather be assholes than simply hit the back button. But the good comments more than make up for the bad, for me. You may be pleasantly surprised!

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Have you interacted? Unless they were personally rude to you, I can't justify letting them live rentfree in your head like this. There are definitely people around my fandoms about whom I'm like, "Yeah, we would never get along," but then I just do my thing and don't talk to them.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
My take is often different from fanon take, so I just pick and choose what stories to read and I just write, write, write my characters the way I like them. I usually get a pretty nice following in my fandoms bc guess what, there are usually other folks who disagree with fanon's standard interpretations.

Just ignore tumblr if it's ruining your muse, OP. I guarantee it will ruin your enjoyment of fandom.

Where did tumblr come from in all of this?
