I've never been into real people shipping, but after recently finishing HIStory3: Trapped, I just can't get enough of these guys and their cute interactions. The fact that two of them are constantly "flirting" on IG isn't helping -_-

In all the choruses of "the book was better!" I never hear people mention Howl's Moving Castle. Yes, the book is super weird and hard to adapt. Yes, the movie has a great aesthetic. But the movie made Sophie and Howl into such bland romantic leads!

I love that book!Sophie is stubborn even when she's wrong and ends up making things worse. I love that book!Howl starts as an actual self-centered jerk, not just a bit vain.

B!S I also hate the way movie!Sophie saves the day with the Power of Love. Sophie's role in the book ending is so much more satisfying to me.

I think Labyrinth would have been a much better movie if there had been more emphasis on the theme of growing up and less on crap like the Bog of Eternal Stench.

It could have still been a fun kids' movie and had a bit more of...
"the adult world is scary and dangerous"
"there's a time to let go of childish fantasies"
"you have to grow up, but you can still enjoy so-called childish things"

I don't understand the thought process that could lead to this conclusion

Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kids movie and thought “this needs more of a moral”

I completely agree with you. In fact, I don't like the movie. I have watched it about a dozen times, in various moods or situations in my life, attempting to enjoy it, and while I can academically appreciate what it brings to the table, actually watching the movie does nothing for me.

I think the story itself becomes very bland in the movie. I find "stubborn girl gets cursed and has to deal with a slither-outer and his manipulative fire demon in an attempt to free herself (+ oodles of sass)" is much more fun and less obvious than "war is bad". The high point for the movie for me was spotting Eric from Boy Meets World's voice in the alleyway sccene where Sophie meets Howl for the first time. Also, I hate deep and thoughtful Howl. I prefer his petty asshat behaviour.

This may be because I read the book first, and was disappointed at how much was different.

Wow, you're not lyin'

(Anonymous) 2021-09-29 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but the vibes of the movie are great

In my head, they're two separate things. I enjoy the movie for what it is, but I don't think of it as a proper adaptation for some of the same issues you mention. I also don't really like the whole "War is bad" message heavily thrust into the plot. But IMO, Jones' work would be very difficult to adapt to another medium, it's all over the place.

Thirded.

That would be a very different movie. I'm pretty happy because it still contains all the themes you mention, just... not quite so serious.
