(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)I've seen most of the Ghibli canon, and it's frustrating when people generalize the films that way. There is a huge range in quality from pretty wretched character and story writing (e.g Earthsea and Pom Poko and many others) to some of the most complex and interesting character writing I've seen (Mononoke and Spirited Away and many others). YMMV on all of this of course. I think people tend to boil Ghibli down "aesthetics and art" because even the bad movies look nice (minus a few).
