Right there with you. I apply the same rules to fanfic and fanart and I tend to filter or ignore entries that mention race politics or race-bending in weird and obnoxious ways. 😕 It's all so tiresome.

I know this probably sounds like a troll secret, but I feel like maybe I understand OP's feeling somewhat if you replace "POC" with "queer". I want LGBTQ+ folks in my media but that's, like, minimum specs - making it the main selling point is a little insulting to my intelligence.

No, it doesn't sound like a troll secret at all, wtf.

I just want to get to the point where diversity is so common that it’s just normal to see, and not have it be some special thing that’s frequently used as a marketing ploy by executives. I want it to be so common that nobody has double standards for “why” the protagonist isn’t a straight/white/male, while people now never question it when the protagonist is a straight/white/male. That isn’t asking for too much, yet it’s treated like it is.

Period dramas that are confirmed to be going for true to life accuracy are an obvious exception of course. As are stories where the diversity of the protagonist or overall cast is integral to the story and characters. Then it makes senses why the story would revolve around the race/ethnicity/sexuality/gender identity/etc. of the characters. Because it’s a true story, or a commentary on societal issues that can only be done by calling attention to the diversity.

This is exactly how I’ve always felt about LGBT representation in books. It got me branded a lot of different horrible things when I posted about it on my LJ.

I just get so tired of people talking up their super-amazing original story by giving the whole list of identity label characters that it features ("my half-black half-South Asian asexual nonbinary disabled neurodivergent protag") and like maybe half a sentence about the actual plot. I don't care about how oppressed your OCs are, tell me what the damn story is about! The diversity should be an additional good point, not the focus.
