Indeed. I kinda felt I was on the edge of appropriateness citing my volunteer work at LiveJournal, though in the end that was what got me my current job. Because what if they wanted to know my username? And I definitely wasn't going to cite my volunteering for the Phoenix Wright Kink Meme daily update archives.

But character references, I suspect most of us would be willing to be "Oh yeah, I've been a part of this online community [Case's name] has been running for many years. Never misses a day. Really looks out for the place and takes the responsibility of overseeing it very seriously." The fact this isn't a paying job for Case just makes the reliability all the more awesome - so it's sad that most employers wouldn't want to hear it.
