I think you can disapprove of the things that happened, while also understanding the context they happened in. Reasonable people can disagree about whether the fact that these things happened while RTD was in charge means that he should never work in television again, or whether it's appropriate and useful to reply to anyone who enjoys his work accusing them of not caring about sexual assault.

He allowed it to happen. Barrowman was an OPEN FUCKING SECRET, and he allowed it to continue.

You care more about tee hee funny man in trench coat with glowy penlight than you do about sexual assault survivors.

I really do not agree that it is reasonable to say that people who disagree with you about how to deal with complicity in abuse or overlooking abuse don't care about sexual assault survivors. Especially in a world where abuse has been really widespread and structurally pervasive and so complicity in abuse in some form or other is also widespread. I think it's a difficult issue to figure out.

I don't think it's appropriate to go around to, you know, everyone who likes a movie that stars someone who worked with Woody Allen, or everyone who likes a TV series with David Tennant, or everyone who likes something made by someone who put Louis CK in a movie or TV series they were making, and tell them that they're a piece of shit that doesn't care about sexual assault survivors. I don't think that's reasonable but that seems to be the logic here. It frankly seems like you're just using sexual assault survivors as a cudgel to win an Internet argument.

What happened to make David Tenant get grouped in with your other examples?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-01 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the star of the show that RTD was showrunning

(Anonymous) 2021-10-01 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that. I guess you’re saying he was just also there and probably knew?

Sorry, I’m slow af today. I’m not trying to be rude.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. He presumably knew (since it was an open secret) and was in a position where he had a lot of influence and pull, so if you're going to declare RTD out of bounds forever with no arguments allowed, it seems like the same should apply to Tennant.

Honestly, it's the whole damn industry. And at the very least, if you're being consistent, then you'd need to swear off everything the BBC has touched since the network bigwigs were also complicit in sweeping it all under the rug. Which doesn't give DW fans much to look forward to, but heck. At least they're not watching a show where twenty years ago the front-runner wasn't proactive enough about policing the behaviour of the actors on set.

Or maybe I'm a sexual assault survivor who's sick and fucking tired of powerful men like RTD getting away with knowing this shit is happening on their set and letting it because their Artisteeeeetic Visiiiooooon is so fucking important and people like it so much they'll excuse it and welcome them back with open arms because IDK it makes them a little bit happy, no matter how much pain people have to go through knowing that jackasses like RTD the Piece of Shit get rewarded and their problems brushed away by the likes of people like you.

AYRT

The other anon wasn’t me.

I’m not accusing anyone who likes his work of not caring about sexual assault. I may judge people who react to people airing their disapproval of his actions with dismissive and disparaging remarks, which has happened before. But I’ve never even insinuated the wide-scale guilt by association belief that openly liking his work means you don’t care about sexual assault or survivors.

I was just replying in agreement to someone calling out the anon above them for saying “some of you weren’t theater kids, and it shows”. Which was dismissive of anyone in the thread who’s uncomfortable with the way Barrowman acted, and the way RTD did nothing. I don’t think that comment was any more useful than you think mine was.

But it was also literally untrue, because me and the anon I was agreeing with are theater kids.

I think that's fair and reasonable! I think it's the other anon that I'm disagreeing with here really and I'm sorry if I swept you together with them.

It’s understandable, the anon thing can get kind of confusing at times.
